I never noticed...

Yesterday I was listening to the classic rock station while driving around and "Hotel California" came on. In nearly four decades of being annoyed to no end by that damn song, yesterday was the first time I ever noticed that the friggin' thing is supposed to be a reggae number.

I would ask myself how this had escaped my attention, but the answer is pretty clear - nearly forty years of instantly changing the station as soon as it came on.

I think that reggae rhythm guitar "chik" has found itself into a ton of popular songs.

Is "Man Gave Names to All the Animals" an attempt at reggae? I probably haven't listened to Slow Train Coming in over twenty years, but for some reason I'm remembering that song might have had a reggae vibe to it?

Yeah, Man Gave Names is it. Although I think Shot of Love is an incredible Dylan album from that period, I can barely make it through Slow Train.
There is also "I and I" from Infidels. Like Jokerman, it has an itty bitty subtle reggaeish almost, not quite, ok, barely, thing going.
John Lennon - "Borrowed Time" is sorta, kinda reggae-ish. Once again, more Carribean vibe. This isn't too bad of a tune.
Actually the list is endless, practically everyone did it.

Coulda sworn that I read about that connection some years ago on this very board, but a search didn't come up with anything.

I've wondered if Carribean tourist bands ever covered it. Would seem to be a natural. And yes, that is the sort of thing I wonder about. It's amazing I've gone anywhere in life.

Rush has that Reggae transition in "Spirit of Radio" that is just. . . awkward.

The reason you didn't notice, breno, might be that it's a reggae riff but the drums are still "on-beat".
