Word the Word bands - this year's Wolf or Bear?

Word the Word bands - this year's Wolf or Bear?

In the grand tradition of the proliferation of Wolf bands several years ago, followed by a similar glut of Bear ones, the current "Why are so many damn bands named the same way?" category is the "Word the Word" band:

Young the Giant
Foster the People
Jeff the Brotherhood
Jukebox the Ghost

Seems like there are at least two or three more whose names are escaping me right at the moment but who every time I hear their name I get them mixed up with one of the other ones.

I hope they're all pay homage to Happy the Man.

Its the same reason that overnight a whole generation of kids crop up named Skylar and Aiden.

Also Portugal the Man and Evans the Death. Not sure if Pedro the Lion counts in this category or not.

"Y'all forgot Mott The Hoople!"

Mott the Hoople sounds a kind of person and his name. "This is that hoople I know, and his name is Mott."

Young the Giant, Jeff the Brotherhood, Jukebox the Ghost and Portugal the Man just sound like an unfamiliarity with the English language. "Behold the brotherhood - its name is Jeff!" What?

So does Happy the Man, actually, though I know it's the first words of a quote. "Happy the man who blah blah blah."

I hadn't realized that the guys in Jeff the Brotherhood are the sons of Robert Ellis Orrall.

So if I were to ever meet them, I'd most likely say "Hey, it's really cool that your dad wrote 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun,'" because I could never keep Robert Ellis Orrall and Robert Hazard straight. Not there was any earthly reason anyone would ever need to.

And of course, Grab Grab The Haddock. They're more of a "Word Word the Word" band.

Jukebox the Ghost is a good name.

I'm pretty sure the lead singer of Foster the People's last name is "People." Wait, no, his last name is "Foster"...or is it "the?"

Moving on:

While in the car with my older, wiser brother a few years back, I asked him if he had any idea where the name Rilo Kiley might've come from.

"Vonnegut," he replied.

Well, I'm not nearly as appreciative of Vonnegut as my brother is, although I have more than a passing familiarity with the man's work, and I had no idea what he meant, which prompted me to ask, "Huh? Vonnegut...Vonnegut how?"

"Okay, well not Vonnegut per se, more like the wordplay you might associate with Vonnegut–or Pynchon or Barth, you know, that crowd...they're just goofing around, messing with the audience."

At the time, I really wanted to punch my brother. I see his point more now. Although I still have no clue why the band Rilo Kiley was named Rilo Kiley.
