The same caller requested all the Grateful Dead numbers in last night's set. So the show, to me, just reinforced what Erik said four years ago: The Grateful Dead were/are the "anti-Beatles."

That band sucked at all the things the Beatles did so well: singing, harmonizing, playing their instruments, writing songs, and playing with concision and focus. The Beatles gave up touring and proceeded to make at least three of the greatest studio albums in all of popular music, whereas the Dead toured almost non-stop and made studio albums that sit on the turntable like a pile of dogshit.

Plus, as Blasmo added, the Beatles knew when to call it a day. As evidenced in this article, the Dead are just getting started, at least commercially.

Ha, I'm pretty sure Lights In The Night was the first album I ever purchased with my own money.

Flash and the Pan holds a peculiar place in my life. I "discovered" the group when I won Lights in the Night from a local radio station. At the time, I found it really amusing that Harry Vanda and George Young would make music so different from AC/DC's. (Hearing The Easybeats a few years later just enhanced my amusement.)

Where does the peculiarity come in? Well, my wife discovered Flash and the Pan a few years after I did, when she got Early Morning Wake Up Call at the record store where she worked. To this day, we argue about which album is better.

All that, for a group that none of our friends (outside the TP aegis) has even heard of.
