I see Soul Asylum has reformed with Tommy Stinson on bass; new LP, etc.

i wouldn't call it a reformation, more like a decision to continue in the wake of Karl's death. They played new york late last year (i was all set to go but chose to see Cream instead) and were, to reliable reports, great.

I don't believe Tommy would be "allowed" to actually join another band by Axl (other than playing a couple spot shows as he did). Apparently Tommy was "allowed" to play with Westerberg (and Josh Freeze) also for a tune on the soundtrack to this animated film "Open Season" that Westy has done the music to coming later in 2006......I think SA has Michael Bland as drummer now (ex-Prince drummer, Westerberg also) - a drummer extraordinaire.

As I understand it, Tommy Stinson, Josh Freeze et al. were under contract to Axl ... as opposed to being actual members of Guns 'N Roses. I've read that Tommy's contract was for two years. This is not to say that he hasn't renewed it.

Tommy is still in / under contract as far as I know. Josh sued to get out of his, and they reached an agreement - he's no longer affiliated.

Tommy's work (solo album/tour, playing with SA, playing with Westy on this soundtrack) was all Axl approved.

Westy, Tommy, and Josh Freeze should really form a band. Anybody who saw Paul bring da noise last summer with his "only friends" knows how great he is when he's playing frontman. That was a great band too , Michael Bland on drums, Jim Boquist on bass, and Kevin Bowe on guitar. Those shows were a blast.

Hey, now might be a good time for my periodic , "Ira, please update the Westerberg entry to include the Vagrant years" post. smiling smiley

Fuck me. For once I'm thankfull I'm just a splattered zit on the music mirror. I don't have to choose between Cream and Soul Asylum. I am a Dead bit of death. I mere fragment of an expulsionary piece of bottom of the ocean dwelling remnant of a once mighty monstrostic carnivore. I am now reduced to a transparent skeleton-like carcass. Eat me.
