I had mixed emotions about reading this in the late 80's, because I thought that it was in fact I who had stumbled across the VH/U2/billygoat formula. This was right before college, mind you, at which point I became the first American boy in over 2 decades to "discover" a long-forgotten Sixties singer-songwriter named Bob Dylan.

WEEZER & WEEN, SLOAN, VULGAR BOATMEN, ANTENNA and BETTIE SERVERT, hell... lots of females too. I fell for 'Great Ira Lines part one' but part deux? OK, so what? I fell for it again (nice job Myster-eno). Nah...
But, great paragraphs?
His immenseness is ominous.

No question about it. But that doesn’t make up for the utter shittiness of the insufferable singer’s music, unmistakable for his keening double-tracked shriek and contrived-to-offend lyrics.

Some great lines from David Sprague's TP review of Smashing Pumpkins:

"[Billy Corgan] blurs the line between genius and jerk with more enthusiasm than just about anybody.... By disc's end, you're left with the feeling that the only reason the name of the London Symphony Orchestra doesn't appear on *Gish* is that Corgan didn't have enough time to learn the bassoon player's parts — you know, just in case."

Sheesh - just re-read the review of TV On The Radio. Ira must have been in a particularly foul mood that day, tho I must say TVOTR doesn't do much for me either.

"The latest hot band (and, yes, I have to admit for this critic that pervasive buzz on a band is like smell on a raw fish: always a turnoff) is Williamsburg's TV on the Radio, who have connections to the truly worthless Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the good sense to resemble somebody different than the other bands claiming to be on the cutting edge. But Suicide really didn't need to be copied, and the parlor trick of cobbling together the pulsing drone of crummy 30-year-old synthesizers (credit "music" man David Andrew Sitek, a guitarist who in concert prays heavily at the Thurston Moore altar) for a third of an album shouldn't make anyone stand up and salute."

I have to agree with Ira about TVoTR ... boooooring live, and I haven't heard any studio material I like. I don't see what all the fuss was about.

And the Yeah Yeah Yeahs aren't entirely worthless. I do think "Maps" is a great song. Also crummy live, though, and, um, Karen O? Chrissie Hynde called. She's coming to your house to kick you in the kiester for copping her look so blatantly.

Ira's comments on The Fixx, a band I really liked in the 80's, but now seem really dated and rarely think about them now.. they are not revered now in UK imports like coldplay, stone roses, echo and the bunnymen, The smiths, New Order... etc...

(Not too surprisingly, the Fixx's American success has been met by nearly total UK indifference.)

I think Jon Young always praised the heck out of the Fixx in the pages of TP itself. I seem to remember him calling them "Ultravox without the starch," whatever that meant.

A friend of mine crossed paths with the Fixx at a Stuckey's in the middle of Indiana back in the 80s. It was about 1 in the morning and he said they were all sitting at one table looking miserable and drinking coffee. They'd probably have been much happier if they'd gotten one of the pecan milkshakes.

i went to WLIR once to do something on the air when the Long Island station was in its glory playing new wave wall to wall and they had pinned up a trashing review i'd done about some horrible german electro dance pop band whose name i can't recall but one they were playing the shit out of as a laughable marker of just how wrong rock critics could be. funny!
