My brother got to go see the Fishbone documentary and a band performance for free. It sounded very cool - his comments:

So I got a ticket and went to see “Everyday Sunshine” on Friday night. Great recommendation! The movie was pretty good – a little long – but well done. Sad is too strong of a word, but it is too bad that such a great band never quite broke through and is still struggling to get it going. They had a panel discussion with the Producer/Directors and Norwood (bass) and Angelo (sax, lead vocals). The Smithsonian accepted Norwood’s original bass for the African American Museum of History and Culture. Then they played pretty much a full show (45 min – 1 hour) which – even in the Lincoln Theater – had a good bit of crowd surfing by Angelo. And – for the first encore H.R. from Bad Brains performed. Oddly it was pretty much straight reggae from H.R.

All in all, it was a really good time… Oh and Norwood and Angelo never left the band and Dirty Walt is back w/ the band. I looked it up and he returned in 2010 (during filming). So out of the original 6, three remain.

I'm going to see the doc tonight. I missed their show in town last week.

I can't believe they never crossed over. It broke me when Reality of My... didn't sell a kazillion copies. Wonderful, at times brilliant band.

Agreed on all counts, and as has been said numerous times on this board (and often by me), one of the best live bands on the planet. I gotta see this documentary.

Isn't Fish the brother of Norwood?

Yes. Their relationship after the breakup is never addressed.

Fish has apparently been playing in Justin Timberlake's band.

I hate to be the Hipster D-Bag here, but their music wasn't good anymore when "Reality" came out. It was over for them by then. I loved all the stuff before that but they were the Chili Peppers at that point. Sorry.

I'd argue that Reality, while not quite the masterpiece that Truth and Soul is, is still a great record. Their last great record, alas. The records following have their moments, but the band essentially lost the plot once Kendall and Dowd left.

Agreed that Reality was the end of their really good stuff, but Monkey and Chim Chim have at least 3-4 decent songs on them. Truth and Soul is their best overall album, but Reality kicks ass, too.

Kendall Jones and Chris Dowd were VERY good musicians. I fortunately got to see the band with both of them in '91 or so at the Cameo Theater in Miami Beach. One of the top 5 concerts I've ever attended.

I saw them 2 years later w/out Jones (but still w/ Dowd), and it was just different. The guitarist that replaced Jones just wasn't that good...and I don't think Dowd played his horns or sang lead once. That marked the downfall of Fishbone for me (Give a Monkey a Brain...).

The doc wasn't quite the transcendental experience for which I was hoping, but I still got a lot out of it. I'm glad to see the members repairing their broken personal relationships, though I don't see it leading to a reunion of the original lineup. Fish the drummer was conspicuous by his absence.
