Awe-inspiring indeed, nosey. Either you already had such a list prepared or that was just about the most productive 23 minutes ever spent. Well done, my friend, and I think you got just about all of 'em, so there ain't much left to say.
Re: Best/favorite cover songs

Thanks Rhett,

It's just my winamp "covers" playlist that I add to every time I discover a new cover song I like. Its one of the perks to being a programmer and being able to listen to music through headphones for about 8 hours a day.

Sorry, STEVE - didn't see your post until tonight, which means you probably won't see it till Sunday, which means you probably won't be able to catch any waves out here no matter what I say. The short answer is that Portland is 90 minutes from the coast, so I don't have any insights into the surf conditions. But it was partly sunny and about 66 here in town today, which is about as good as we can hope for in late October. Hope you were so lucky in FLA.

Some pretty great stuff there, Del, tho that Echo cover of "Paint It Black" always kinda annoyed me.

I'm curious about how these are grouped into threes or fours or whatever. Is that how you break it up to go in and ID the songs you've played? I was never a radio DJ and it never occurred to me that, on a non-formatted station, one would pre-plan where you break in for announcements and song IDs.

'Cause it SUCKED! Almost as bad as their Doors cover, man!

Rumor has it that they learned that song off the Greatest Hits CD.

...

The Television cover is much better.
Re: Best/favorite cover songs
October 28, 2011 12:27PM
Thanks, Rhett. And yep, three breaks per hour. First one, back-call the songs and read a public service announcement; second one, back-call and give the weather forecast; third one, back-call and let a five-minute NPR News break in, at the top of the hour.

Re: Best/favorite cover songs

I would add two:
Brand New Love (Superchunk)
Eight Miles High (Husker Du) - the greatest cover in rock, and possibly the most intense 4 minutes ever recorded. Just my opinion, but I'm right.

Re: Best/favorite cover songs
October 31, 2011 02:51PM
Yeah, it pretty much sucked, though it's a damn sight better than their cover of "All You Need Is Love", which is truly horrendous. We may have done a list on here before of the WORST cover songs, and if I failed to nominate that one, it was an egregious oversight.

I feel bad busting on the Bunnymen twice in the same thread for their terrible covers, 'cuz otherwise I love them....

One more very nice one:

Bo Diddley / New York Dolls - "Pills"
Re: Worst cover songs

Simply use the following URL to immediately find 10 of the worst:

That should seed your list. There has never been a cover of this song by an artist who seemed to comprehend the point of the song.

David Bowie is a very rich source of good covers — both his own recordings, and some choice covers of his songs by other artists. I can keep up my streak for the rest of my days at KRCC pretty easily — including Bowie in every show, in one way or another.

I remember seeing those guys at the Hotel Manly in the '80s. They were the first tribute band I'd ever heard of. It was like a Wednesday night and the room was pretty empty. It was like sitting down with a beer with The Beatles in the background.

Bowie does some good covers.

One of music buddies used to love to play/discuss/rave about Bowie's Let's Spend the Night Together, claiming it was the best cover of all time and put the Stones to shame. And the Stones were his favorite band.
