I'm sure you-all get your share of music biz spam as I do, but this email headline really stopped me in my tracks:

"Balkan-Spiced Triphop Meets Steampunk Psychedelia"

I read it. I read it again. And again. What the hell does that mean?

Opened it up and read a long list of other descriptions (for only one band, mind you) from "tribal" to "classical." Well! That about covers it, eh?

Also: "post-dubstep beats". So we're in the "post-dubstep" era now? Could you tell the difference between dubstep and post-dubstep?

Sometimes writers can be so descriptive that they end up being not descriptive at all.

(Oh, and the music? I had a listen. "Electro-rock" I'd call it. Or maybe "electro goth rock" since it gets a bit atmospheric. But if that's all it said, maybe I wouldn't have opened the letter...)

Even "Balkan-Spiced Triphop" was too much. When I hear the word "Steampunk", I stick my fingers in my ears and yell FISHKA-FISHKA-FOO !!!!!

Over a decade later…

From one that hit my inbox today: “ This new album pulls from the glamour of 70's bell bottom rock, 80's post punk no wave college rock, 90's bubble grunge dirt pop and 2000's cerebral psych stoner core.”

So! Another one of those bell bottom post punk no wave college bubble grunge dirt pop cerebral psych stoner core bands. Can’t wait to see that section in a record store.

My head is spinning from thoughts of "bubble grunge dirt pop."

This is what happens when you go on Wikipedia and copy genre names that sound cool with no idea what they really mean or sound like.

Wow. Even those occasional posts full of "Óíèêàëüíûå êëèìàòè÷åñêèå óñëîâèÿ" make more sense.

Dubstep goes "bippity-bippity-bippity-bip"
Post dubstep goes "bip-bippity-bippity-bippiy-bip."

This is only a guess. I'm not sure I'd be able to identify either alleged genre.
