Was just pondering the careers of a couple of poor dumb bastards who always seemed on the verge of having an actual career only to have things fall through on them. Wonder what they're up to now?

I speak, of course, of GARY TIBBS, who probably thought he'd hit the big time when he became the bassist for Roxy Music, only to see that fall apart, then went on to the interesting on paper but not particularly on vinyl Code Blue which evaporated in a yawn, then became one of Adam's Ants just in time for Adam to decide to stomp on the anthill. But at least his name got immortalized in the classic chant from "Ant Rap" - "Marco, Merrick, Terry Lee, Gary Tibbs and yours truly! In the naughty north and in the sexy south, we're all singin' AND I HAVE THE MOUTH!" (Although it had to hurt when the only comment Ant would later make about him was "Well, he looked good, anyway.)

Then there was poor ROBIN SIMON, who replaced Stevie Shears in Ultravox just in time for John Foxx to leave and throw the band into flux (but at least he got to play on Ultravox's best album, SYSTEMS OF ROMANCE), then was handpicked by Howard Devoto to replace John McGeoch in Magazine only to appear on one live album before being sent packing, spent a few fruitful years as a John Foxx sideman, then Foxx retired from music for a while so that put a stop to that, then he was recruited by Billy Currie for his reformed Ultravox, only to manage to depart the same band (sort of) for a second time.

Anyone know what these two are up to now? (Maybe they should form a band together.) And are there any other guys like these two floating around out there - poor saps who come close enough to success with several bands that they can taste it only to always have it snatched away from them at the last minute?

gary tibbs (chortle)
don't forget his near miss with Christy Maccoll, and (yippeee) playing with Corey Hart on "Sunglasses at Night" to seal his one hit wonder fate.
Gary is doing the ever popular "music projects" in L.A. currently.

Don't forget Mr Tibbs was also in Breaking Glass - Hazel O'Connor's band in the movie of the same name.
