I was trying to come up with bands that never covered anybody elses songs either live or on recordings

The Cars covered Iggy Pop's "Funtime" and The Nightcrawlers' "Little Black Egg." Both can be heard on the 2-CD Rhino anthology Just What I Needed. (Sorry, Rebel.)

Kraftwerk maybe?
No cover tunes spring to mind by the Velvet Underground.

Those two coverversions by the Cars that Delvin mentions were also covered by Bebe Buell covered on her Ocasek produced EP. I'll have to dig that bizarre thing up to see the personnel on it - I'm wondering if Ocasek used the same backing tracks for both Buell and the Cars.

Most fans don't regard the post-Reed line-up, led by Doug Yule, as a legitimate version of the Velvet Underground. That said, the Yule-helmed quartet did record at least two covers: The Dixie Cups' "Chapel of Love" and Bobby Blue Bland's "Turn On Your Love Light."

I can't find any covers in Kraftwerk's catalogue.

I did look up the Cars' versions of "Funtime" and "Little Black Egg" and apparently they are indeed the same backing tracks as were used on Bebe Buell's Covers Girl EP, with Ocasek & Orr's vocals replacing Buell's.

At least that's what it says in online sources I found. I suspect it's more likely that the Cars versions were the originals and that perhaps Orr & Ocasek's vocals were recorded as guide vocals for Buell to follow or something. I can't imagine any reason why the Cars would have decided "Hey, it's sure a shame to waste those two cover tunes on Bebe Buell. Let's re-use them!"

Although I guess maybe if they needed some rarities to spice up the hits compilation, recording vocals for those two tracks would have been an easy fix. I need to investigate this a little further.

squeeze covered the song do the mess around live- old ray charles blues song not to be confused with she is messed around.
i dont know of any other covers that they did though.

the beastie boys never covered a song but they sampled and im not sure if i would qualify them

good question breno. i would probably make the qaulifications as one who had at least 2 albums and played live.

did steely dan do any covers?

I can't recall a single cover version that Bolan did with T.Rex.

Perhaps the rest of you can?

Some other possible winners:

T. Rex did record some covers, though they didn't come out until the 90s reissues of Bolan's Zip Gun ("Do You Wanna Dance" and "Dock of the Bay") and Dandy in the Underworld ("To Know Him is to Love Him," of all things).

I believe you are correct about Bailter Space, though. And I agree about loving them. Do you know if their 2008 reunion lasted beyond that New York show? I was hoping they'd do a SXSW show to announce their reactivation, but no dice so far.

Buzzcocks (sure they did some live early on, but once they got into the studio)

I want to say Gang of Four and Depeche Mode, but somehow I think I might be wrong on those.

Gary Numan did Erik Satie's "Trois Gymnopedies" as the b-side to "We Are Glass."

Gang of Four did a whole album of Gang of Four covers....

I'm not recalling any covers by Squeeze on any of their recs, but they may have done some live.

What about Sloan? I don't have all their albums, but again can't think of any covers on the ones I do have and don't recall any covers the one time I saw them live.

And I'll third the motion on Bailter Space - they were awesome.

What's the minimum number of albums a band needs to have released to qualify for the discussion? There'd be plenty that were one album and out that would technically qualify, but that wouldn't really seem to fit the spirit of the question.

I think the Teardrop Explodes (3 albums) might fit the bill, unless you count sharing a song with Echo & the Bunnymen as a cover tune. Otherwise, I can't think of any covers by them, unless something turned up on the deluxe reissues.

I've done my best to refrain from listening to GO4's Mall for the last two decades (tho I still have it somewhere), but the TP review notes a Bob Marley cover on it.

The expanded CD version of East Side Story by Squeeze has a cover of Bobby Womack's "Looking For A Love" produced by Nick Lowe.

It's the only thing that got recorded with Lowe producing as part of the band's original plan for the album, which would have been to release it as a double ten inch album with each of the four sides produced by someone different - Elvis Costello, Lowe, Dave Edmunds and Paul McCartney.

Lowe and Edmunds each only got one track done, McCartney none (he was probably in jail in Japan right around the time the album was being recorded) and Costello ended up handling the bulk of the album.

Echo covered the Doors' "Soul Kitchen" around the time of the self-titled record. It's a bonus track on the reissue, so I assume it was a B-side.

Echo also did a version of "Paint It Black" on some compilation I have (tho I don't think Reno was suggesting that they hadn't done covers).

I'm also having a hard time imagining Mogwai doing a cover.

Echo also did a crummy cover of "All You Need Is Love" which appeared on the reissue of Ocean Rain, proving once again that bonus tracks are un-needed on a classic album, and should at least be confined to a second disc.

T.rex's version of summertime blues is actually my favorite.

The are alot of young bands that may or may not have done covers.

I almost feel guilty for dropping this post in, since it has the potential to kill a really enjoyable thread ... buuut ...

And also "U Got the Look" which is even more horrifying. I prefer to not be burdened with the mental image of Numan doing any rammin'.
