Ignorance is Bliss

Ignorance is Bliss
May 13, 2011 11:58AM
My ex-girlfriend called me the other day wanting to know if I'd heard that Bob Marley had died. Um, yeah, I said. I heard that news thirty years ago.

I guess there must have been a story on the radio a couple of days back about the 30th anniversary of his death and she misunderstood it, as she thought it was a breaking story.

Once I went to see the Guess Who, and before the show, the people sitting in front of us thought we were seeing the Who.

Hey Brad, at least she stills thinks of you, so that's nice, eh? She means well...

At the height of Midnight Oil's popularity, the college I was attending showed a live satellite tv broadcast of a concert by 'em (with Hoodoo Gurus opening) in the student union. A group came in, saw the screen, and were disappointed - they thought it was going to be a real Midnight Oil concert. At a school rec room.

So what? I just heard that Paul McCartney had a band before Wings.

Ahem.

I remember a quote from him saying how they used to joke about kids being surprised that Paul had a band before Wings, but now he was getting fans that were too young to remember Wings (and I think he say this during the late 80s/early 90s)....

My "personal best" ...

About three years ago, during dinner with an old friend, we got around to talking about music (big surprise, huh). I mentioned that Led Zeppelin had played a highly anticipated reunion show in London, two nights earlier, so perhaps there was hope of a full tour.

She rolled her eyes and said, "Be honest with me, Delvin: Don't you think Mick Jagger is getting way too old to keep doing that?"

Jeez, my brain actually went offline for a few seconds! When it came back online, it hurt! Finally I said, "Led Zeppelin, Beth ... not the Rolling Stones. Two different bands."

She just said, "Oh," and returned to dinner ... as if I'd just told her, "Pennzoil, Beth ... not Quaker State. Two different brands." Or something like that.

I once worked with a guy who I got into a conversation with about Ringo Starr and I mentioned the movie Caveman and he said "Yeah! He was in that movie. And then George was in that stupid Dracula movie!"

I had to think for a couple of seconds before I figured out he was talking about the movie Love at First Bite and that he thought George Hamilton and George Harrison were the same person.

until recently, i had thought that the current US Prosecuting Attorney was in fact the same Patrick Fitzgerald that put out the album "Grubby Stories" in 1979.

alas that was Patrik Fitzgerald.

somehow, i think the US Attorney could one up the UK folkster with similarly titled albums of his own like; "even Grubbier stories" or "my Grubbiest stories yet" and comfortably sidestep issues of copywrite laws altogether...

I'm not going to start a new thread for this tidbit. However ...

Did ya'll know that wikipedia has a "Led Zeppelin (disambiguation)" page? Shall I throw a fit now, or wait until I get home?

What else would those words refer to?

Led Zeppelin ... the toothpaste?
Led Zeppelin ... the acne cream?
Led Zeppelin ... the jazz label?

Holy hell! Exactly which Led Zeppelin are you talking about here? Could you please be more specific?

...

At best, you might be forgiven for thinking that there was a Led Zeppelin copying machine.

If you were a blues artist, that is.

breno,
did you parlay it into something?
--------
"he thought George Hamilton and George Harrison were the same person"
literalawl @ real punchline
--------
guess i can add this story:
Today I had business at the Police Center. Nice spring day so got out my old sports car with cassette deck. The tape I brought with me had Crucifucks on the B and I had flipped it over. About the time I found a parking spot I was fully into the music so I parked and turned it up a bit.

"Kill the fucking police if they get in your way.
It'll set a good example for the children today.
It'll keep kids out of trouble shooting pigs after school.
Wasting cops will be the hero's golden rule."

Then it all-of-a-sudden dawned on me what I was doing. I glanced at the people around me, sunk down a bit, turned the volume back to comfort levels, rolled up the window and hung out for a moment. Oops.

Ignorance is bliss indeed. Ah well. Wasn't so long ago I'd have done the same with intention.

13 year-old to me: "Do you know who Steven Tyler is?"

Me: "Aerosmith"

13 year-old: "Huh? No, the judge guy on American Idol"

The same generation has grown up associating the name Popeye with fried chicken, instead of spinach.

I checked said disambiguation page (because I wanted to see if the name also is a brand for toothpaste or zit medicine). It points out that the title Led Zeppelin has been used on at least three releases by the band — the debut album, the first box set, and the DVD.

This does have the potential for another thread, though. Please stand by.
