And on the short list I forgot Archers of Loaf "Strangled by the Stereo Wire" which I think clocks in at under 2.

Good picks on the Richard Thompson. "Calvary Cross" is available in some epic-length versions. "Cortez the Killer" by Neil Young is 7:31 on Decade.

E's "Symphony for Toy Piano in G Minor" is around 11 seconds.

On the long end, I'd add Slint's "Good Morning Captain" to the excellent list above, but would concur that you gotta go with "Marquee Moon" as the hands-down winner.

On the short side, I'd nominate just about everything in the Minutemen canon, but especially "Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing".

I've been told there was a Cabaret Voltaire 45 minute single. As this was way way before the CD format I was wondering how they did it. I'm assuming you either turn it over halfway through or you can only get it on cassette or maybe Cartridge(!)

Ok, I'm game.

Long:
Iron Butterfly - "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida": 17 minutes
Pink Floyd - "Echoes": 23 minutes

Still, these are like advertising jingles compared to many of my classical music recordings.

Short:
Something by either the Buzzcocks or the Ramones...the musical equivalent of bottle rockets.

Well, if we're talking classical, I've gotta go with the London Sinfonietta & Dawn Upshaw recording of Gorecki's 3rd Symphony. Absolutely gorgeous and what, about 80 minutes long or so?

What was the name of that guy who a few years ago was putting out symphonies based on Superman and Jackie O? Was it Daugherty or something like that? I really wanted to like his stuff but never got into it.
