I was reminiscin, in true geezer fashion ,arguin with a youngun about Bloc Party being a pale imitation of the GoF. I told him I saw Buzzcocks and Gang of Four on the same bill and his jaw dropped. Left him mutterin about the best double bill ever.
Other worthy doubles:
Blasters/Los Lobos
Pixies/Throwing Muses
Cramps/Panther Burns
Ramones/Blondie
Television/Plasticland

Rules: Beatle Bob cannot count as one half of the double bill.
No imaginary shows that a narcotic scrambled brain remembers.
No Music fests where one band played in a tent while the other
band played 3000 yards away.

edit::further comment::Neil was obviously bored on our tour-stop as well. Added to this, he gave a 1 hour Thurston imitation that didn't add up (this after 10,000 Neil fans waited in the hall for SocialD and SY to finish). My interest in NY ended that night.

worst double bill:
billy bragg and new order at the ontario, d.c., summer of '82(?).
it took forever for sold out the show to begin. billy bragg and the audience was insulting one another in a steam bathed, packed theater. when new order came on, the bassist was too drunk to play, the singer was swigging on a whisky bottle and the gig, short.

however, it was written up as "... very noteworthy in that Rob Gretton actually joined New Order on stage to play syndrums for the set opener In_A_Lonely_Place, as Hooky had had too much to drink, but casually strolled off after his bit was done.

A good buddy of mine saw the 'Mats/Husker Du, the 'Mats/REM, and Husker Du/REM (at Harvard I think or somewhere in Mass.??)......I didn't see any of those shows.....I did see Go4 w/ Mission of Burma though back in the day. That was probably the best for me off the top of my head.

The best double bill that I saw was probably the Replacements opening up for Elvis Costello. The best double bills I would like to have seen would be Barrence Whitfield/The Ramones & the Bonzo Dog Band/The Kinks

A couple come to mind that I have seen...

Lloyd Cole and Ron Sexsmith earlier this year in Atlanta

Nitzer Ebb opening for Depeche Mode on the "Violator" tour.

Coulda been awesome...PJ Harvey opening for U2 on the "All You Can't Leave Behind" tour, but PJ got sick and was replaced by Nelly Furtado and we just hung out and drank beers and didn't even make the opening act.

P.S. - Slash's Snakepit opening for AC/DC....ROCK!

The only technical 'double bill' was the Cole/Sexsmith show. I did see the David Lee Roth/ Sammy Hagar tour a couple years ago (free tix) and Roth completely blew and Hagar rocked. Go figure...

Edit #2 - Robyn Hitchcock opening for R.E.M. on the "Green" tour was pretty cool. I realize opening acts aren't really double bills, but they're as close as I can get.

Edit #3 - Stereolab opening for Sonic Youth.

Saw the Social D/Sonic Youth/Neil Young tour, but left after Sonic Youth because Neil was obviously bored. As the only person standing and dancing during Sonic Youth in a sold-out Myriad in OKC, I'm sure my karma is okay.
Peter Case/Lucinda Williams (very small show in OKC; acoustic. Bloody beautiful).

Pearl Jam / Neil Young- Went to see Pearl Jam but was blown away by the epic power of Neil Young

Jimmy Cliff / Robert Cray / The Grateful Dead

John Hiatt / Robert Cray / Stevie Ray Vaughn

Duran Duran / David Bowie

Girlsschool (sp?) / Iron Maiden / Scorpions- Gotta tell you, the monster staggering around onstage during Iron Maiden was a sight to behold

I've seen a bunch of big names open for the Stones but they were all boring (arena headliners ought to let the openers use the big video screens too)

Kinks & Joan Jett at an amusement park
Stevie Vaughn right before death & Jeff Beck w/Terry Bozio (effectively triple bill, two shows then another w/Vaughn doing rhythm for Beck). Pity Beck was touring Guitar Shop

In memory a failed double bill: was supposed to see Throwing Muses at Iron Horse. Didn't show and local atrocity Oat Pearl played. Week later supposed to see Flaming Lips same venue. Didn't show and Oat Pearl played.

How about the Sonic Youth / Beastie Boys team-up back in '96? Did it work out?

Two that I can recall which were not double bills but an assortment of heavies are the "Clash of the Titans" tour back in '90 comprising Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax with Alice in Chains opening; and the triple billing of Metallica and Guns n' Roses with Faith No More opening during '92.
