Anyone heard his post-90s work? I saw Michael T's review of Gavage I&II on TBT, and suddenly I'm interested again. I do have everything he uploaded to archive.org, but he's done quite a few things in the intervening years...he did seem to be headed in more folky direction. Michael? Anyone?

Since he's no longer supported by a label, his stuff has gone back to the lo-fi sound of his early recordings, but Paul K records are about songs more than sonics, so that's par for the course. I don't have everything post-Saratoga, but I can recommend Cycles, which is a full-band record a la his Alias stuff, Terminal Hotel, which is a solo record a la The Big Nowhere or Blues For Charlie Lucky (Paul told me when I bought it a few years ago at SXSW that he hated the production of it, but the songs were good - it's lo-fi, but not unlistenable, and the songs are good) and the ambitious Panopticon, which is available as a 3-disk set in a handcrafted sleeve or a 1-disk CD-R condensation. The former is preferred, needless to say.

I didn't realize how behind I was until I saw this list. I still don't have Vol. 3 of Gavage and I didn't know about the others. Paul sends an e-mail list around, but a self-promoter he ain't.

No doubt about that. The weird thing is that I only found out about the new website through Paul himself (or whoever responds to the email you listed). I had just done a google search of his full name and that site did not come up at all. The guy can't win for losing.

I have this on mp3, and the sound is really bad. Not in purposely lo-fi way, just really distorted. Does the cd sound any better?

the farnsley best ofs are made up of originals from the albums from the year 2000 through 2010. otto's blues is brand new except for a few songs that were used on cycles. cold front is new to be released but it dates from 1989 or so and the sound quality is substandard. the same goes for heavy is the head that wears the crown. songs for girls is what it sounds like. one new song on there is otherwise unavailable. music for music for films is made up entirely of instrumentals.

Looks like the new "best of's" might be the way to go at this point.

Considering that he mostly sells his stuff on CD-r these days, I suspect "out of print" is a relative term.

And yes, he answers his own e-mail. He's a one-man operation.

Hmm, not sure I want to shell out for cd-r's. I'll have to think on that.

I still haven't started buying up the the old stuff on disc, so I'll probably concentrate on that for now. Thanks for the info.

They'll have original covers. I think he usually asks $10 apiece. I'm pretty sure the Panopticon disks are properly manufactured, though the package is hand-assembled.

I think I actually like Maintain Radio Silence better than Cycles or Terminal Hotel. It is, however, really strange that he's giving away mp3's of MRS, when that was actually released after Panopticon. Weirder still, MRS is available on iTunes. Why make one Farnsley release available as a download yet none of the others? And why pick the one you're offering for free elsewhere? *shrugs*

I think a lot of Paul's inconsistencies would be solved if he had a manager to look after his affairs. But, to my knowledge, he hasn't had that in a decade, at least.

I read somewhere that his girlfriend was helping him in that regard. Like Paul, she too has had some health problems, so I'm guessing she's not able to do that anymore.

Her problems were pretty severe, and more mental-health related. He's been fairly forthcoming in his e-newsletters. I think the film covers some of it. The trailer doesn't make it seem that uplifting, but I think there's a "bloodied-but-unbowed" side to it all. I hope. I certainly be seeing it when it finally comes out.
