Best Non US/UK Bands (Ever?)
December 13, 2005 01:02AM
Ok, so spurred by the Kraftwerk/Coldplay thing, who's the best non-US/UK band? This was the subject of much discussion tonight at casa de mats84. I'm throwing around names like Radio Birdman, the Saints and the Go-Betweens, but I am being told I'm too Aussie-centric. Meanwhile, a friend who we'll just call "drunken idiot who owes me 10 bucks" is making the case that more good music has come out of Canada in the last 2 years than in the preceeding 2,003 combined (Wolf Parade, Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene).....but now the conversation has degenerated towards camp (Pink Lady?). I have come to the Trouser Press board, seeking refuge....

I'm happily Aussie-centric when nominating "Weddings Parties Anything" from Melbourne!

Treat yourself to "Trophy Night", their "best of" CD, you won't believe that this band was under your radar screen for its entire existence.

I like to put a word in for the Dutch Outsiders, whose stuff I first heard through the Lyres doing covers of a lot of their songs. I heard through Ugly Things that Wally Tax died earlier this year.

I'm going to have to pitch for Soundtrack of Our Lives (sweden)...

Another band I thought of was Los Shakers. I enjoyed the Big Beat CD compliation of theirs. It sounded like the Beatles if they started in South America instead of Liverpool.

Can we not include the Republic of Ireland so U2 can be precluded?

Cave etc
Tactics
The Clean
AC/DC
Propagandhi
Toots

But really, when you get down to it, it's gotta be either the aforementioned Saints or Radio Birdman.

As good old WPA, I've always liked The Scorn of the Women album. Live they really really cooked and really really made you feel like drinking.

By the way, you can't be too Aussie-centric.

I agree that it's hard not to go with the Saints, but I'd also include some of the others mentioned here: Birthday Party, Can, JPSE, maybe Kraftwerk, maybe Tall Dwarfs. And as for Canucks, I've always had a soft spot for Nomeansno. Fela is clearly a phenomenon unto himself and may just fall into another category altogether.

The Dandy Warhols are from Portland smiling smiley

My vote for The Saints as well.

Anybody ever heard of a band called Bob Hund from Sweden? The only reason I know about them is because they did a fantastic and very original cover of Romeo by The Wipers.

Interesting that nobody pimps for Björk; what with all the critical acclaim over the decades. For me she stands out when directed by von Trier.

For me Bjork has always been someone more easily admired than enjoyed. Glad she's out there doing what she's doing, but it's a rare day indeed I actually take the time to listen to her.

Kind of like Todd Haynes films - I respect and admire what he does, but I've never watched one of his movies and thought "Wow! I really enjoyed that and want to watch it again!"

i don't like the static samples that she widely intoduced yet are very ppular to this moment.
i don't knock her down and i am ignorant enough on the whole about everything rock n' roll.

can't be either of em, one band put out three great albums and then started sucking with extreme ferocity and the other didn't last long enough to be the best of anything...

longevity and sustained high quality are what i'd vote for. hmm, lessee, what about can? the chasm between their best (pick your own, i'm going with yoo doo right) and worst (anything after 75 or so) is too great to even consider.

new christs? best (no next time) and worst (groovy times) can sit side by side on my turntable any day of the week...and they're both better than anything he did with birdman.

i suppose birthday party wouldn't be a bad pick either, if not for the fact that it wasn't even nick cave's best band.

I suppose I’m buying into the actual mystique that a short sharp career can create with Birdman. I think so many people speak of them in hushed tones because they heard the album after everything was over and then found out they were already gone.
So, yeah I guess longevity and sustained high quality do make for more of a ‘best band’ where sudden greatness and a sudden departure can create something else.
So yes, point taken. With The Saints I guess it does depend on which model, a bit like The New Christs.
Speaking of Radio Birdman, Denis Tek has reprised The Visitors for a one-off show in Sydney with a line-up featuring Pip Hoyle and Mark Sisto. They played last week, I’ll have to see what went down.
