I'm not too wild about these guys, but this is enjoyable enough in a Simon & Garfunkel kind of way. Or maybe that guy's voice just reminds of Art Garfunkel.

He's a tenor, but his voice can't match Garfunkel's angelically airy timbre or near seamless transition to falsetto. Garfunkel can go from a baritone G2 to a falsetto Eb5. On the other hand, Garfunkel's voice (at least the voice he had back in the '70s) is so pure that it seems almost childlike; so ethereal and pitch perfect that his harmonies blend transparently with the main vocal line.

Art Garfunkel is, quite simply, the perfect harmony machine.

The first Fleet Foxes grew on me like a Rhizopus after awhile. Too bad the album doesn't drop until May/June.

Fleet Foxes. I love their stuff as well. How will they ever top that debut?

I had the opposite reaction. I liked the album a lot at first, but I kind of got tired of it fairly quickly. (I had the same reaction to Blitzen Trapper, which I purchased around the same time.) I think I was hearing too many bands that sounded like them, and I kept thinking I could just go listen to Crosby, Stills & Nash.

I didn't get rid of the record, though - I need to go back and spin it again. Maybe with the passage of time it'll sound fresher.

I want to like them, but geez, the friggin' echo. Kevin Ayers sang "This is a song from the bottom of a well", Fleet Foxes live it.

Once again, the TP board provides unexpected educational benefits. Thanks to Pagan, I took the trouble to learn what a Rhizopus is.

That's exactly how I reacted. I bought it at Target or some such ungodly place, because I had heard a few cuts, got excited, and was out shopping with the kids. But I went from excited to disinterested in warp speed with that album.

I was at a friend's house back on November 1st, 2009 and asked if he'd heard of the Fleet Foxes. He got their debut cd from the shelf and put it on while I looked at the cover.
I said, "This is a cool painting on the cover." He then got a book from his bookshelf of various paintings by the same guy. I don't recall his name, but the paintings stuck with me more than the music. Wow Ned, what a compelling story. Zzzzzzzzzzzz...
