Destroyer

This new Destroyer record, Kaputt, is UNBELIEVABLY lush. It contains the best use of major seventh chords and flutes on a pop record since, say, Destroyer's Rubies. An instant romantic classic. Bejar's the indie Van Morrison. I can't wait to make slow love to it.

I'm quite taken with it myself. But then, I've been taken with pretty much everything the band's done since This Night, so I'm biased. But I like the step Bejar's taken with the production too. It's almost like electronica, but not quite - like Bejar heard a Goldfrapp record and decided to do his version of it.

I went to the record store to buy it this past Wednesday - and when I walked in the door, the store started playing it the moment I walked in. Weird. The universe was encouraging me, apparently. I ended up hanging out in the store (and buying way more than I intended to) until the record finished spinning.

I'm listening to it as we speak. It's really good.

I have listened to a little of it and really liked it. I need to pick this up.

Man this is some swanky hipster yacht rock. I have never been able to get into Destroyer...turns out all he has to do is mix up some Christopher Cross and I am on board.

Not to get on a tangent (ahem), but I once had an old boss tell me that he thought the Robyn Hitchcock cassette I was playing at work sounded a lot like Al Stewart. It was almost enough to make me curious to hear more than "Year of the Cat."

All I ever knew about Al Stewart I learned from "Year of the Cat." I think that held true for my old boss as well, as he couldn't name another tune by the guy either.

Oops. "Time Passages." I've heard that song at least once, so that former employer would most certainly be able to say the same. But again, neither of us could recall it at the time.
