Going to see Wire tonight for the Sydney Festival. Support band are LA four piece HEALTH.
Anyone know anything about 'em?

I had brief exposure to them--my impression was lumpen, uninteresting noise-rock married to not-so-good 1990s rave music.

They were pretty noisy. Kind of like if those post punk Sheffield bands had guitars. Some OK moments but pretty hard to enjoy.

I'm with ya on "Map Ref" as one of Wire's best songs. That and "Mercy" are probably my faves by them. I think they're coming thru here in a coupla months, so I'll try to go. I enjoyed the hell out of the time I saw them in 2003 or so.

I'll be more curious to hear about how Wire's show was. Although one should never take one's health for granted, of course.

I would be interested in hearing how Wire was live also. THeir new record is getting great reviews.

Kay, The Ideal Copy was you first CD ??? Wow. You were a hipster, weren't you? Mine was the Randy Rhoads / Ozzy tribute album.

The Ideal Copy is one of the only recordings that I own in a trifecta of formats.

CD. LP. Cassette.

The other is Strange Times.

It does appear that Wire is rejuvenated. That last CD was so good I didn't even recognize it as Wire. Which is a back-handed compliment, but mighty deserved after some of the drek they'd put out previously. Are you listening, Manscape and The First Letter?

I remember that Ozzy Tribute thing. It sold like @#$%^& hotcakes there for quite a while. You couldn't keep it on the shelves. It was like that with The Beastie Boys debut and Strong Persuader. That Beastie Boys thing was freakin' scary.

But I cannot conjure up any memories of who was actually on that Tribute CD. And I'm ...

It was just an Ozzy w/ Randy live album, not a tribute album. I threw it out years ago. My first 5 CDs btw were Ozzy, Whitesnake, Elvis Costello's Spike, Trout Mask Replica, and Beggards Banquet. Weird start to a collection.

You make me excited to hear the new Wire, Kay! How did the new stuff go over live, Aitch ?

They were great although it sure wasn't a greatest hits kind of thing (to their credit). The bulk of the set came from Red Barked Tree which I hadn't listened to at all (although I grabbed a copy at the show as well as Send Ultimate).

Most of the punters there (not counting chardonnay sipping festival freeloading wankers) seemed just happy to be seeing them and it was good to see an audience embracing the new material.

Highlight for me was 2 People In A Room but I was sad not to hear Map Ref 41 N 93 W which is one of my favourite ever songs.

Wire is playing Austin in April. I don't know if they've ever played here before. I'm gonna do everything in my power to be there.

Hopefully Gang of Four will follow suit.

This new Wire record, Red Barked Tree, is spectacular! Better than anything else I've heard from them since 1979. It has bumped PJ Harvey (or perhaps James Blake) from my "best of 2011" top spot. HIGHLY recommended!

I'm also finding that Red Barked Tree seems to get better after a few listens. When I first gave it a spin, I thought it was good, now I think it's great.

I saw Wire last night and it was pretty great. They did play "Map Ref" here and it gave me chills to hear it live! They also played "2 People In A Room" and the song "Pink Flag", but nothing else from the first three albums, which was slightly disappointing to me. But I liked what I heard of the new stuff and am intending to finally pick up the new one on Saturday.

I also was reminded that Colin Newman really has one of the best/most distinctive voices in music. It just fits the music so perfectly.

I saw them last week. I was surprised that they played anything from the first albums. For some reason I always thought none of the old stuff was ever played so it was a nice surprise for me. Only one song from Send, however. I haven't seen Wire before but it went like I thought it would. They played the entire set without speaking to audience but during the encores Colin and Graham loosened up. I don't know if it was faked or not but at the beginning of the second encore they seemed genuinely surprised by the rapturous applause. Great show!

They didn't talk to the crowd much here either, except to periodically say thanks. There was one funny moment when someone in the crowd shouted out "Wire kicks ass!" between songs. Graham says "Did you say 'kiss'?" and Colin responded "We do both."

My Bloody Valentine's cover (from the Whore tribute to Wire) is might mighty fine... if you can find it. In this era of down-loadable hipness, it shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

It was the last thing MBV ever released, if memory serves. That was quite a while ago. I guess they must have felt that they had all the time in the world to record a follow-up to Loveless? No pressure.

On a Jane Austen-to-Wire related tangent ("yeah!"): Check out the Keira Knightley version of "Pride 'N Prejudice" and tell me that the actor who plays Mr. Collins isn't a dead ringer for Colin Newman. It's like the video for "Kidney Bingos" with everybody in knickers. That would be "knickers" as in knee-length pants ... not the other thing.

Gang of Four are following over this way in March so hopefully for you guys they follow suit and you can get your postpunkpioneer fix.

I actually got on the guestlist for that one in a competition where all I had to do was update my online details for the venue and on winning was told to inform them what gig I wanted to attend, too easy.

Been enjoying Red Barked Tree just now and had a look at the booklet in Send Ultimate which pretty much says that apart from a retrospective set that they did for ATP and then toured the US with, they are pretty much forging ahead all the time and you're only ever going to get a handfull of nostalgia.

How is that Smith Westerns? When it's described as glam rock, I want to hear it, but when it's described as lo-fi garage rock, meh.

Yes, I could go look for song samples, but I want to hear the TP opinion.

Ditto the Radiohead. I quite liked In Rainbows after being indifferent to them since OK Computer.

Though Radiohead usually impress me in the end, I'd say the new one won't win converts. It's consistent but not a new benchmark above In Rainbows. Just good. Same is true for new Mountain Goats which is rather staid but, again, appealing to fans.

The first track on the new Smith Westerns was already a great single last year but little on the album matches that single except for "End of the Night". Assuming you have last year's single, listen to this one next and then decide. It's a good indie LP but not a classic or anything, imo. Great singles band perhaps.

Social D just put out their (his) best in almost 20 years.

New Pains of Being is excellent.
