I saw that there was a GBV cover band from Cleveland named Gilded By Vices. That's pretty clever, if you ask me.

Speaking of cover/tribute bands, there's a group coming to Boulder next month with its tribute to Daft Punk. The duo is called "Faux Punk."

What an easy gig! These two guys can just pre-program all the music for their set, then just put on the helmets and stand there behind the consoles for a couple hours. (Actually, I guess the same can be said of Daft Punk.) For all the audience knows, the band members are just standing there looking at porn.

I dont care what anyone says - Electronica fucking sucks as perfomance art. When I see a guy with a laptop on a stage, it's an instant erection killer, no matter how many lights they have flashing and how many props on the stage.

Now, ladies and gentlemen...

ERECTION KILLER!

(or)

ERECTION KILLA! (rap)

I saw a DJ Rap performance a few years ago, and have to say I had the opposite reaction to that particular electronica show.

(three guys with mikes go back to holding the mikes so close to their mouth that all you hear is distortion while backing music is piped in. No band members play an instrument and several appear to be superfluous)

Sadly, that's all too accurate a description of De La Soul's performance when they toured with Cake, Modest Mouse and the Flaming Lips a few years ago. I'd really looked forward to seeing them and was treated to undistinguished beats and indistinguishable vocals.

At the same show there was some woman sitting a few rows in front of us who would inexplicably go into a trance every time the bluegrass band that performed between acts would take the stage (the Hackensaw Boys, I believe), and she'd jump up and shimmy and shake and then flash her alleghenies at the bastards sitting on the other side of the auditorium. The first few times she got carried away by the twanging, the ushers came by and warned her and she'd sit down until the next time the Hackensaw Boys took the stage, then she was instantly on her feet, bopping and flashing the folks across the way again. She finally got booted from the venue, much to the disappointment of the audience across the horseshoe.

And THAT is my De La Soul story.

wait...why did they repeatedly retake the stage?

I went to a pretty awful Schooly D show in the late 80s that made me never want to attend a live rap performance again. I mostly succeeded in that endeavor thru the 90s and early 00s. But when I saw De La Soul 5 or 6 years ago, it was actually better than I expected, especially given that it was an outdoor, festival-type show.

Of the rap acts I've seen on stage, Public Enemy and Ice-T actually were outstanding. Ice-T finished his show with a super-hot three-song encore by Body Count. (Yes, they played "Cop Killer"; this was before the big controversy had hit.)

I was disappointed by A Tribe Called Quest, mainly because their sound was poor. Arrested Development and Cypress Hill were pretty boring, but I wasn't disappointed by them, since I didn't expect anything from them in the first place.

The only other rapper I've seen was Ice Cube. He sucked.
