I'm not really sure why, but it always bugs the hell out of me when a tv writer slips some hip music reference into a show not so much to define a character as to show how cool he, the writer, is.
I didn't bother changing channels tonight when the rather lame cheerleader in law school show
Hellcats came on (yeah, okay, the star - Aly from the former Disney pop band Aly & AJ - has grown up to be damnably hot, but honestly I was working at the computer and just didn't bother changing channels. I swear!), and overheard this exchange:
Some Guy: "The cop put his foot through my guitar. Guess he wasn't an Alex Chilton fan."
Some Guy's Lawyer: "Who?"
Aly the Hot Blonde Cheerleading Law Student: "Alex Chilton. Singer for the Box Tops and Big Star. Went to school near here."
Some Guy: "Very good."
Hot Blonde Cheerleading Law Student: "The Replacements wrote a song about him."
Some Guy "Now you're just showing off."
Nah, she was just reciting her lines. The writer who believes he deserves better than to be writing a show about a hot blonde cheerleading law student is the one who's just showing off and praying that a producer for a hipper show is watching.
Now the show is concluding with Some Guy and Hot Blonde Cheerleading Law Student duetting on "The Letter." So the writer really has no basis for his showing off, otherwise he'd have had the supposed big Alex Chilton fan singing a song that Chilton actually wrote. But I don't suppose "Like Flies on Sherbert" would have that familiarity required for ending tv episodes with.
