RIP Link Wray

Adios to one of the greats.
I was lucky enough to see him live on his own and once with Robert Gordon.
Apparently a few days ago in Denmark where he lived. I just heard about it. I can't find a link, but Wikipedia lists him as dying this month.
He was 76.

Damn! Just saw him this summer. He was great - in his long (balding) dyed-black hair, black jeans, leather jacket, shades, bashing away on his guitar. He hobbled on stage like an old man, but I forgot that once he started playing.

The Adam Ant discussion actually reminded me of him - my first exposure to Link was the "Rumble" riff used on the Ant's "Killer In The Home" from "Kings of the Wild Frontier" - instantly loved it.

Wow...talk about playing it loud right up until the last minute. This summer in Green Bay, someone I know played with him--said he got onstage and promptly fried an amp.

"Rawhide," "Rumble," "Slinky"...most of my favorite instros were by Link. A true loss. He did some great shows with Los Straitjackets in the late '90s--and I'd have to say that LS' Eddie Angel is the one true inheritor of Link's uncanny tone and playing.

i remember seeing him at g.u. in d.c. with robert gordon around '82, then around 2001 in austin. both amazing shows. i also admired ronnie dawson who passed away i think in 2003. their live performances had similar steely-eyed, steady beats that went well with a heavy, prominent bass sound which in turn supported long, intense jams in which neither the band members or the audience knew which way link or ronnie was leading to.
