Hip influences for 06

Hip influences for 06

Figured I would get an early start on the year-end prediction season and state, with nigh unto 100% certainty, that these will be the names dropped by the hot new bands of 2006 as their main inspirations:

Romeo Void
Pylon
Hunters and Collectors
Nico
Be Bop Deluxe
Big Country
REM (but only Chronic Town)
Pere Ubu (late 80s configuration)
China Crisis

And for a brief period some will try to claim that the band Boston was cool all along, but this will fizzle out quickly.

Naked Raygun
The Coctails
Prefab Sprout
Afghan Whigs
Martha & the Muffins
Mission of Burma
R.E.M. (but only *Fables of the Reconstruction* -- sorry, Brad)
Romeo Void (but only *It's a Condition*)
The B-52's (but only *Wild Planet*)
Adam & the Ants (but only *Dirk Wears White Sox*)
Everything But The Girl (but only the albums before "Missing" became a hit)
Pere Ubu (but only the recordings they made as Rocket from the Tombs)
The Who (but only the recordings they made as The High Numbers)
Kiss (but only the recordings they made as Wicked Lester)
The Insect Surfers (but only the song they had on the TP flexi-disc)
The Wild Stares (likewise)
Phil 'n' the Blanks (ditto)

Oh, and the album Tori Amos made with the band Y Kant Tori Read will continue to draw big bucks in collectors' circles.

Holy christ. I can't believe I'm seeing Wild Stares mentioned. Justin Burrill (the guitarist) used to be my roommate. God, I still have a vinyl copy of their album.

As for influences for 2006:
Rain Parade
Audience
Fingerprintz (but not the Silencers)
20/20
Blue Aeroplanes
Dash Rip Rock

I only know the Wild Stares from the two songs on the above-mentioned TP flexi-disc, "Istanbul" and "The Iron Hand." Both awesome songs, but I never did manage to find a copy of their album.

Same goes for the Insect Surfers. "Barricade Beach" showed up on many a mix tape of mine in the '80s, just from the TP flexi.

I ken that you're new to this board, Rokkr. Welcome! And stick around; you'll be amazed at the artists you see mentioned in these posts.

You ken correctly, and thanks. I imagine I can come up with a few arcane references myself once in a while.
Perhaps if I get nostalgic I'll post sometime about when the scales fell from my eyes in 1977.

Speaking of the Insect Surfers, that's how I first got to know about Robyn Hitchcock & the Soft Boys via their cover of "Underwater Moonlight".

there's a thread to consider - bands you only found out about because someone you liked covered one of their songs.

Green Pajamas by way of Material Issue
Robert Johnson by way of Cream (not really, but to a degree)
Bob Dylan by way of Peter Paul & Mary (this was in 1962, so don't gasp)

i'm sure i'll think of many others...

Well, as I said in a previous thread, I first heard of Love through the Dammed's version of Alone Again Or & I first heard of the Creation via the Godfathers' cover of How Does It Feel to Feel

i bought mott the hoople after listening to dramamrama's cover of 'i wish i was your mother.' there are lots of covers i didn't know were written by other bands familiar to me but these examples tend to reflect my ignorance like the above mentioned.

Johnny Cash (but only for the xmas season)
Alanis Morrisette (but only the 1st two covered up and forgotten LPs)
Monkees (without nesmith)

It will be hip in neo-frat rock to say you never liked Arcade Fire

Anything on Flying Nun put to a techno beat/grime/dubstep then claimed as a Portland influence in prerparation for the plaid revival of '07.

I'm going to pitch for the trifecta of:

Young Marble Giants
Lightning Seeds
John Fahey

with David + David as a long shot.

...and maybe red crayola (again).

New York Dolls/Thunders will be hip influences in '06.......2/5ths of the band unite for first studio album in 32 years causing media coverage, articles about the legacy. Hipsters will be all over the two 70s records like Kirstie Alley on a Big Mac.......also, in anticipation of the Arctic Monkeys frenzy that will hit in January when they release their full length, look for a big celebration of the Undertones....

I believe that's the hip thing for '05, actually.

This is really embarrassing but I heard The Damned do Looking At You ages before The MC5 and thought it was an original, "one of my favourite Damned songs, especially on Live at Shepparton". I actually heard a band called the Gas Babies do it in the MC5 style at a gig, got suspicious and THEN finally heard the 'Living in the USA' version.
