OVERPLAYED CLASSIC ROCK SONGS THAT YOU DONT GET TIRED OF

LAYLA- it doesnt have the stairway to heaven or freebird thing for me.
maybe cause it has different parts and the piano part as well.
YESTERDAY- I guess cause it transcends rock and its just a standard as far as music. as is most anything by the beatles

ROSALITA- so different then most long songs. so unpretensious . time flies.

Stephen King says Stairway to Heaven should be shelved and forgotten 'cause it doesn't have anything new to offer or something to that effect. I beg to differ. It's a beautiful song.

I see what he means, actually. It was a beautiful song the first 5000 times, but repetition has stripped it of any meaning. Hearing "Stairway" on the radio is like walking by a Toyota on the street.

"The Boys Are Back in Town" by Thin Lizzy. I love the conversational tone of the lyrics. Every time I hear it I feel like I'm sitting in that bar while Lynott rants.

"Don't Fear the Reaper" - BOC. Love the guitars. I never tire of it, which is amazing. considering it's the only BOC song that ever gets played anywhere anymore.

"Won't Get Fooled Again" - the Who. I almost said anything by the Who, but I could live perfectly happily without ever hearing "Squeezebox" or "Magic Bus" again.

"Kick Out the Jams" - the MC5. OK, in my fantasy universe, this song gets a lot of airplay on classic rock radio, making everything else pale before it.

"Come Together" or "Get Back" by the Beatles.

"That Smell" by Skynyrd. Maybe because it's not as overplayed as "Free Bird," "Sweet Home Alabama" or "What's Your Name."

"Stay With Me" by the Faces.

"Sympathy For the Devil" by the Stones.

Once upon a time I would've said "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" by U2, but then 120 Minutes played it every week for about 8 weeks in a row, and it used up its shelf life with me.

the amazing thing about the boys are back in town is it sounds like a bunch of tough yet regular guys from brooklyn . Yet its thin lizzy a band from ireland whos lead singer was black.
it also has a innocence that is lacking in modern music especialy rap evident by the line " that chick got up and slapped johnnys face, we just fell about the place if that chick dont want to know just forget her. now rap or modern day rock would have had her stuffed in a bodybag or calling her every name in the book

I agree on "Layla." I don't think I'll ever get tired of hearing it. It makes everything Clapton did after it even more depressingly awful, knowing that the man who recorded the original version of "Layla" could also be capable of the unplugged version of it.

The golden era of Rod Stewart will never get old to me - "Maggie May," "You Wear It Well," "Mandolin Wind," "Every Picture Tells a Story." Good lord, those songs are just timeless perfection, followed by a collapse of Clapton proportion.

Any early 70s George Harrison. Or anything from the Ringo album, especially "Photograph." Early solo McCartney - "Uncle Albert," "jet," "Band on the Run." Oddly enough, I can do without most solo Lennon, Plastic Ono Band aside. If "Imagine" or "Mind Games" come on the radio, there's a 50/50 chance I'll switch stations.

Don't know if Badfinger or early-70s Todd Rundgren get played enough anymore to be considered overplayed, but I'll never tire of "Day After Day" or "I Saw the Light," etc.

I have an odd affection for "Still the Same" by Bob Seger and "Dance the Night Away" by Van Halen, but could gladly skip most anything else by either of them.

Early 70s Rod and early 70s Harrison - good calls! I've been listening a lot to the former lately (a buddy of mine are working on learning "Every Picture Tells a Story") and I never tire of All Things Must Pass, which is still my favorite Beatle solo album.

With the condition that we're sticking with songs that get a lot of classic-rock airplay ...

AC/DC – "It's a Long Way to the Top"
Aerosmith – "Draw the Line" (their last moment of greatness, appearing on the otherwise awful album of the same name)
Alice Cooper – "No More Mr. Nice Guy"
Blue Öyster Cult – "Burnin' for You"
Bob Dylan – "Tangled Up in Blue"
Boston – "Peace of Mind"
Cheap Trick – "Surrender"
David Bowie – "Rebel Rebel"
Elton John – "Bennie and the Jets" (actually a cool song, at least until Elton trots out the falsetto; great piano work, just the right touches on acoustic guitar, and Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson were a stunning rhythm section)
Foreigner – "Urgent" (too many great memories attached to it to dismiss)
Heart – "Crazy on You"
Robert Palmer – "Doctor Doctor" (one of my go-to songs on karaoke nights, especially since the love of my life is a Ph.D)

WAR - by Edwin Starr. I have always taken this song for granted, but when I listened to it a couple more times on the radio, somehow it gets stronger. The lyrics and vocal delivery complement each other perfectly, which makes it so powerful. It's the kind of music where I have to drop everything just to listen to it. And the title should always be in CAPITAL letters.

I always would make fun of michael mcdonalds voice and just imitate him. especially the song what a fool believes.
never hated him or particularly liked him either but i just recently saw the lyrics written down and was seriously compltely knocked out by the lyrics in the song without any ironic feeling.

My read on this song is its about a guy who is overnostalgic about his past and thinks events or relationships from it was better or more important than what it actually was as is eveident by the woman who basically barely knows him.
ironic thing about the song is its anti nostalgic stance in the lyrics yet when the doobie bros or michael mcdonald would sing this the first thing a fan would think is . i remember the time and feeling nostalgic about the song

whats also a paradox is the happy catchy beat but when you listen to the lyrics its anything but happy.

John Cale was a huge fan of "What a Fool Believes." I remember reading an interview with him where he was saying it was as well crafted as a Renaissance painting or some such thing.

I also liked the band Self's version of it all done on toy instruments.

Local radio dudes Roy Slaven and HG Nelson used to do a humorous voice over of the major football matches here (turn on the TV and turn down the sound and turn up the radio, doesn't happen anmymore 'cos they switched to commercial radio).
One year a team ran out to what they said was "The official team song" and it was Dirty Deeds. As soon as I saw that, I thought "that SHOULD be their team song"

I agree with almost every song/artist mentioned on this thread. Stairway To Heaven may be tireseome to some - to me, I marvel at his perfection and construction every time it's on. Same with Wont Get Fooled Again and some of the other epics mentioned here (Layla, Rosalita, etc)

As for Rod The Mod: yes, yes, yes, and yes! I think Rod's early records are generally undervalued, even by those who are in the business of valuing such records. I'd grade his first four records: A, A+, A+, A. I also think Italian Girls, Lonsome Hobo, An Old Coat Will Never Let You Down, and Cut Across Shorty are all as great as Every Picture Tells A Story, which is a 5-star masterpiece by any standard. Seriously, seek out Italian GIrls right now and tell me it shouldnt be played on classic rock radio every 12 hours. Damn, Rod and Ronny knew how to make an acoustic guitar (and even a mandolin) a proper rock instrument. And hot damn could that man write a couplet! Here's the opening couplets to 5 consecutive verses

Are these shitty, pseduo-poetic end-rhymes? Perhaps. To me...apply a great loose Chuck Berry riff by Ronnie Wood, double it with an acoustic, tremelo pick a hot bassline, thwap the skins, and I think it's fucking genius.
