Isn't the "in Texas" part at the end of the headline a little unnecessary?

I have to admit though this makes me think just drinking it cold out of the bottle has been rather lazy on my part. From now on all my beer gets consumed in ravioli look alike squares.

Southerners have a reputation for being willing to deep-fry anything. My wife even has sampled deep-fried butter.

The last paragraph of the article quoted the "inventor" as saying that no one's ever succeeded at deep-frying a liquid before. This is not true. Deep-fried Coca-Cola often can be found at county fairs in the South.

I had a deep-fried Snickers bar at a music festival earlier this year. It pretty much cured any urge I had to try a deep-fried anything else.

Come to the Oklahoma State Fair and watch as anything that's edible is made less edible by frying. I think they make it a point to try and lower your life expectancy when you go there.

That, and to give older CW musicians a place to play.

No thanks, San Diego has its own county fair providing a similar spectrum of crispy, oil-drenched items and arthritic artists performing well beyond their "sell by" expiration date, including but certainly not limited to:

o Sammy Hagar
o Paul Rodgers
o Foghat
o KC and the Sunshine Band
o Kenny Loggins
o Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
o Blue Öyster Cult

...and well over a half dozen "tribute" bands.

Our State Fair would be glad to have artists of that caliber. We're getting:

Grand Funk Railroad
Marshall Tucker Band
One Disney Kid (Mitchell Musso)
Tenth Avenue North and Addison Road
MC Hammer
Matt Morris (he's gay and married, so consider this the Alternative act, esp. in this state)

Yup. And all the deep-fried yogurt, beer, Reeses, turkey legs, possible Farmer Vincent's Fritters, as well. "My... meat... I... I... used... preservatives!"

At my wife's behest, we attend the North Georgia State Fair every year–the real Georgia State Fair takes place in Macon. Perry (the City of Lights), GA, which is about 30 minutes south of Macon, hosts the Georgia National Fair, as well.

So, here's the entertainment lineup at the North Georgia State Fair this year (just 2 weeks away!):

I go to the County Fair rather than the State one (we have Demolition Derby), but I just checked the website for the State one and it sucked out loud - I've never even heard of any of the supposed Big Name live acts (Terry Fator, Owl City and Miranda Lambert) and on the small stage for free the best they could come up with was Mark Lindsay and Evelyn Champagne King - either of which I apparently would have guessed wrong on playing "Dead or Alive?"

Miranda Lambert's actually one of the better young C&W stars around these days. She's being put through the Nashville "make her young & pretty" mill (she was already young and pretty, btw), but she's got real talent and has busted her butt to reach the level of success she's at now.

No idea who Terry Fator is. Isn't Owl City the band that ripped off the Magnetic Fields?

I love Miranda Lambert! That is a great county fair booking IMHO. I just checked the schedule for the upcoming Topsfield Fair (Topsfield, MA). I dont know if the musical acts are fully booked yet, but the website is advertising "Mitchell Musso and Emily Osment from The Hannah Montana Show" and a group called "Boys Like Girls" - four young whippersnappers you cant help but instantly loathe based on their faces and hairstyles alone. Give me the Grand Funk Railroad Tribute band any day !!!!

That's the State Fair (same state, nosepail), not the county - I go county for the Demo derby, which is pretty short on name talent although Penn Jillette did come and drive in it once.

The entertainment rosters at these county fairs sound much like the one at the Colorado State Fair. The county fair in my county limits its entertainment offering to a talent contest.

I did see ZZ Top at the State Fair, though, in the early '80s. That was a very cool show. And in '87, my dad surprised us with front-row seats at the State Fair to see Roy Orbison. It turned out that I was more familiar with his songs than I'd realized ... and the man was still in superb voice. (For the hundredth time: thanks, Dad.)

Guys...this is a whole other world to me.

Guess I'm an L.A. elitist or something but the state/county fairs are nowhere near where I live, I've never been to one, and figured a state fair had something to do with awarding blue ribbons to prize pigs 'n' whatnot.

Am I missing out? Shall I live a life of sipping white wine and listening to NPR?

Being from Texas, around here the state/county fairs are indeed mostly about farm animals. I've had a good time at a fair taking kids around to see the animals and ride the rides, but unless you've got kids, I think you can safely ensconce yourself in your NPR and wine and not feel cheated.

Oddly enough, here in Austin the Livestock Show & Rodeo happens on the same weekend as the South By Southwest Music Festival. There's usually no crossover whatsoever between the musical acts. There's usually one night of a big (but not too big) country star and one of a washed-up classic rock act.

What the heck! I didn't even check the concert listing for the Illinois State Fair this year, but now see that Blondie & Cheap Trick were booked! Fortunately it seems to have been rained out, so I'm not too terribly upset about not knowing about it. But I guess that'll teach me to not check these things.

Demolition Derby. A statue of a cow made out of 300 pounds of butter. Corn Dogs. Row upon row of chickens pent up in little cages, many of them prizewinners. Incredible folk art from local tweens. 400+ pound pumpkins. Sheep judging. Broke down arcade rides that should have been retired in 1974, manned by broke down people who make Shane MacGowan's 1990s dental style look shiny and crisp. A full night's entertainment and food for maybe $30-40.

Never been, but I bet you don't get that shit at Disneyland.

Totale left out the high diving dogs, the greased pig scramble, the camel and elephant rides, Republican coloring books, booths handing out buttons with mysterious cryptic messages like "No moving firewood" and bizarre juxtapositions of pictures of Jesus and nacho platters on food booths. And Illinois has the added bonus of the fairgrounds containing one of the ugliest statues of Lincoln around, as well as the only public restrooms I've ever been to where the electric hand dryers are NOT manufactured in Illinois, which seems weird to me. (Everywhere else I go they're made by some company in Batavia up by Chicago).

And I guess back in the olden days there used to be stripper tents.

The Jesus & Nacho Platters were great but the brothers Rodreidguez always freaking fight. They're like Favre - they're in, they're out, they're back in. Too bad; I liked their stuff. Even the one with the drum machine.
The acoustic one with the one brother's girlfriend not so much.
That's one band that refused to make their first LP over and over.
