Buzzcocks newest stuff
November 08, 2005 12:00AM
This is my first post on IRA's website and I own all four editions of the Trouser Press Guides....well on to the heart of this post. I own most of the Buzzcocks stuff including some of the reunion stuff Trade Test Transmissions and All Set. I am curious about the newer stuff and Merge and Go Kart are these CDs though while or a waste of time ?

If you like the old stuff, you should like the new stuff just fine. The Buzzcocks are kind of in the same spot as Echo & the Bunnymen or even the Stones - their days of being exciting are long gone, but if you like them, their current output isn't painful - just comfortable and enjoyable.

I liked the album on Merge quite a bit - "Keep On" is a pretty good song.

you might want to also check out the Buzzkunst album, which reunited Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto.

Always like a Damned or Buzzcocks show. Never repeat-listen to the recent Buzzocks LPs though. Glad they put out the LPs and continue to work but to me they sound like an obligatory tour LPs. I'm waiting for the melodies and the 'rush' which always seems around the next corner. Girls like the Buzzcocks when I've seen them! The Damned - to me, they hold a place right next to the Clash and Pistols.

Stones. I wasn't holding my breath for their latest and not planning to see the show this month (price boycott). Yet, I am surprised that several tracks have stuck with me and demanded a replay. Their best in 20 years, perhaps. That said, it should not have been a 2x.

Wolf Parade - This one has been itching me, too. But I can't decide yet if it's one of the year's best or just 2nd gen Arcade Fire?!

Regarding the Stones:

1) You are right on in that there are damn fine tracks on Bigger Bang but also many forgettable ones (only one embarassing one- the power ballad Streets of Love)

2) Sweet Neo Con is not really a song but a full on rant about the Bush Administration from the lips of Mr. Jagger set to a skeletal groove. Didn't see that one coming either. BTW they have never played it live and don't hold your breath waiting for it. See setlists here:

3) I saw the Stones last week and I enjoyed it very much even if I could have done without a few of the warhorses. I can tell you one thing: Mick Jagger is a 62 year old man and he is a dynamo. They all move amazingly well for senior citizens but Mick is really something else.

The albums that the Buzzcocks have released since resuming active duty are good to excellent. They're only disappointing if you expect such a band to be revelatory the second time around.

*Trade Test Transmissions* and *All Set* are both very fine albums, IMO. *Modern* incorporates synths on a lot of the songs, which may bug some of the fans of the band's early work. But to those who know Pete Shelley's solo material, it comes across as kind of a merger between *A Different Kind of Tension* and *Homosapien*. The album *Buzzcocks*, on Merge, is more of a return to their straight guitar-focused sound.

All four albums have the top-notch songwriting that any Buzzcocks fan expects. They may not be breaking new ground on these albums, but the ground they're plowing is fertile.

Oh, and their live shows are great. The times I've seen them play, I've found Shelley and Diggle to be very friendly and approachable in person, too ... even suffering fools gladly, such as the high-school age guys who had come for the opening acts and didn't know the headliner. (When these guys heard me ask Pete and Steve to autograph my CDs, they looked at them dumbly and asked, "Who are you? Are you with one of the bands?")

well, considering how OLD those guys are looking nowadays...it's a perfectly valid question for a high-school age kid to be asking. in fact, one of the secondary reasons behind me passing on the buzzcocks last tour was because just looking at their picture was making me feel old and creaky. haha

Thanks gang. The year the Sex Pistols reformed I made a choice to go see the Buzzcocks instead and it turned out to be 25th anniversary to the day their forming. It was a stellar show and they have been the one of those bands from my youth that I still listen to with some regularity. The show was funny and some girl removed he bra and threw it on the stage and like a scene out of a movie it landed pefectly on Pete Shelly's guitar neck. He of course hammed it up......all in all a fun show. After the show I had a long conversation with Steve Diggle afterwards and expressed my disappointment they didn't play "sixteen again". I probably bought my first my first Buzzcocks record at age sixteen and to be able to buy new ones some 26 years later is amazing. I will go get the CD on Merge and I know it won't start a revolution but at age 42 who wants to do that anyways.

Me.

Actually, I don't want half so much a revolution as a re-awakening. I want people, far and wide, to realize that there's plenty of great rock & roll out there; you just have to take the trouble to look for it.

Yeah, I know, it's hard to do when you have a job and kids and all ... but better to strive than not.

It may have been a "valid" question, but IMO, it showed that the kid who asked it was just a dumbass. Honestly, if you're going to see a show, you kind of owe it to yourself to find out a little something about the bands whom you know will be on the bill ... especially the headliner.

When I saw The Damned a couple years ago, half the audience cleared out after the opening act. The Damned gave a terrific show, and those kids just plain missed out. Why? Because they were ignorant, and had chosen to remain so.

when i saw the darned a couple years ago (no longer good enough to be considered damned)...the "misfits" (with dez and marky ramone) were the headliners. was i wrong to clear out after the darned had finished their horrid little set? probably, but to be honest, i was so bummed, i just wanted to get the heck outta there and go eat some tacos...

fortunately, di had been very good and the dickies decent, or i'd have considered the afternoon a complete waste of time.
