$40 for a toy love album about fifteen years ago.
today, i dont give a rats ass about rare Lps.
most of them suck anyway.

I spent $25 on an original pressing of Beefheart/Zappa's Bongo Fury a couple of months ago, but hell, that's not much more than I regularly pay for gatefold, double-vinyl new stuff. I think that I paid $20 or so for the newest Fall album on vinyl. I've probably paid $30 or thereabouts a few times, but can't remember for what.

$40: orig. gatefold "VU & Nico" with unpeeled banana. The grizzled Viet vet who ran the shop that sold it to me told me; "Don't you peel that fucker!" Later got John Cale to sign it.

Bought Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers for 50 coz it was signed by the Keifster. The hammered Korea vet who worked the store said, "If you unzip that fucker, it's bad luck for a decade." Turns out the Stones visited a witch doctor who performed black magic on unscrupulous record execs. The zippered whammy was merely a side effect.

That said, 15 bucks for Gene Clark's "No Other" and maybe a little more for the self-titled Moby Grape debut. Both at a record sale convention in Binghamton, NY.

30 dollars for a Rough Trade artists compilation called 'Wanna Buy a Bridge?' It had songs by the Pop Group, Young Marble Giants, the Slits, Delta 5, Cabaret Voltaire, and Robert Wyatt on it.

The most I remember paying was $20 each for 1962-1966, 1967-1970 and the White Album, all pressed on the appropriate colored vinyl. I got those in 1985 ... so $20 was pretty good-sized moolah.

I also grabbed an unopened, original Cotillion pressing of Loaded, that same year (and at the same shop), but I don't remember what I paid for it. Something tells me it wasn't more than those Beatles pressings; I think it'd stand out in my head, if it was much more.

I think it was $25 for a copy of Dead Boys "Young Loud And Snotty" in the early '80s. It wasn't in great shape either, but it was the only copy I'd ever seen at the time.

$40 for a used Flying Nun import of "Fall In A Hole." Late Eighties.

I may have bitched and moaned about it in another thread ... there is a heart-rending skip during "The Man Whose Head Expanded".

It was one of these record shops where nothing (and I mean nothing) in the entire place has a price tag on it and the fat, oily bastard who runs the place just waits to see how much your eyes light up when you ask him how much he wants for anything. He was avarice personified.

I hate places like that. I paid a visit to a local guitar shop the other day and it was the same way. Blowholes! Put a damned price tag on the stuff!

Whaddya want me to do ... show up with a sled full of pelts and barter with you?

Since it's OOP with no copyright issues, a number of bloggers have posted that wonderful Arcesia album. Ummm...maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that? (Pictures entropy saying "D'Oh!," slapping his forehead.)

oh I've done my homework. :] Typically, I don't need to own the physical product if it's exceptionally hard to find, but I've been a little obsessed with tracking down a copy of this for a while now. The backstory is just too classic, and the album will probably never be given a proper reissue.

I paid $200 bucks for the Jazz Butcher's "Big Questions: The Gift of Music vol. 2" compilation CD on Ebay a few years back. It was only ever issued on CD in France before Big Time Records went belly up. Given that 4 of the tracks were only available on the CD it makes it a rare and collectable CD for Butcher fans. It is the only time I ever sat poised at my computer refreshing the screen every five seconds and waiting until the last possible second to put my bid in to get the CD. Worth every penny!!!
