MGMT on SNL

i imagine there's always a buzz around brooklyn about some band or another during the spring. but from what little i saw of MGMT last night had me stoked enough to fling open up the fridge, open another bottle and rehoist rather than changing into me nighties.

if the band isn't the only one making the stops around NYC they certainly appear to know their way around.

MGMT at the very least is like your familys cat. nocturnal, affectionate, and frisky. Their performance last night was absolutely inspiring.

Putting aside the feline similes, I found their SNL performance to be entertaining. Assuming it was truly a live performance (never a safe assumption) they were tight, energetic, had a full, rich sound with good dynamics. I caught their first song but wasn't willing to risk the specter of watching more painfully tedious sketch comedy just to catch their final performance. I cut the electron flow after Weekend Update.

My fambly's cat is a coiled ... hissing ... ball ... of ... spite. She hates to be touched. Her eyes are constantly running goo that dries up and clogs her vision. Hence her name: "Goo-goo." Plus, she sheds all over creation and pisses on your clean laundry if you leave it unattended.

Totally agree. I never watch SNL, but was in Athens and it was late and it was raining (a lot), so I turned it on, and was blown away. I've been humming "Brian Eno" all day. They put on a damned good set.

Excluding the horrible weather on Saturday, how was the trip, blasmo?

Still recovering from a really bad kidney stone that fired up right when I got home. We spent almost the entire time at Cedar Shoals High School, an amazing place I would love to have attended as a student. We won the contest, but the constant rain kept us from actually hanging out in Athens. Beautiful city and surroundings, though. I would go back just to visit in a heartbeat. Wound up staying at the airport a lot longer than I was going to, since a couple of the guys decided to try and get on standby.

Did get to go to Weaver's, and it was great. Best Chicken Fried Steak ever. Wish I'd had time to go downtown and see some stuff, but next time, for sure.

Can't possibly describe the awesome that was waking up to the hotel room radio playing "Watusi Rodeo" on a local station.

I see that Sonic Boom was involved with the new CD (the one with the cover art that looks like Sonic The Hedgehog surfing). I asked the child working the desk at the local record store if he'd heard it and he mumbled something about it "bein' kinda ... I dunno ... psychedelic or sumthin' ..."

That helped a lot, but I'm wanting a little more information.

In a related note, I finally saw MGMT on Jimmy Fallon's late-night show over the weekend.

The band was fair (I won't be downloading free versions of anything they've done any time soon, but it wasn't insulting either - kind of a Tigerbeat take on Mercury Rev). I'm certainly not officially dedicating myself to thwarting them at every turn.

What I'm really wanting to know is:

What was up with Fallon holding that damned LP cover up as much as he did? Are they paid money based on screen time? It was quite ridiculous.
