Re: The New Year

The New Year
October 07, 2005 03:13AM
Despite seeing it in numerous discount bins in record stores, I've found myself quite taken by the The New Year's album Newness Fades.

I've since been told that the the key member(s) were in a band called Bedhead and that there has also been some kind of collaboration with Mission of Burma.

Is any of this accurate and is there Bedhead recorded material around?

Bedhead were a reasonable nineties band who, as far as I know, called it quits due to bad label luck and general lack of interest. They were part of the whole texas post-rock scene that centred around the interrelated labels Trance Syndicate and Emperor Jones (one of which might have been owned by a Butthole Surfer).

Anyhow, Bedhead released three records and a few EPs on (I believe) Trance Syndicate. One of the EPs features a great slowed-down cover of Joy Division's Disorder. Of the three albums proper, the third and final one is probably the best. It was called Transaction de Novo and is worth picking up if you find it used. Of the nine songs, I think two of them are in 4/4 time. As I recall, Bedhead's thing was creating textural post-rock without using guitar effects (other than natural guitar overdrive).

When the band broke up, the brothers Kadane (who played guitars and wrote the songs) formed The New Year.

Don't know anything about a Mission of Burma collaboration though.

Hope this helps.

This is the kind of underground conspiratiorial activities that renders the layman paralytic.

I command all encryptors (paid handsomely enough) to investigate. Pay close attention to any communication between these revolutionarists' discussons that center around either Bedhead or New Year.

ALL TOGETHER NOW!!!

At least one of the Kadane boys is (or was) in Consonant, MOB bassist Clint Conley's side project.
