You see a license plate that you instantly associate with musical artists and/or albums. In this case, it was 154 UBU.

Now I'm imagining a Wire album with David Thomas guesting.

when you complain that you spent a whole day alphabetizing and catorgizing your cd collection and laboring over what to put where. even more so if you say you had fun doing it

When the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear twins is Aphex, and the second thing is Cocteau.

...you can hear the difference between a Lloyd solo and a Verlaine solo on the Marquee Moon album (granted it's listed on the sleeve), and you can immediately recognize whether it's Lloyd or Quine on the early Matthew Sweet albums.

actually, it's aphex TWIN.

I can tell Verlaine from Lloyd, and Lloyd from Quine.

I would think of Cocteau before Aphex.

And I did recently move & sort the CD collection, as part of preparation for a home-renovation project ... except I didn't complain at all. In fact, I was quite pleased when I was done.

you know you're a tp'er if the term "new wave" is still in your vocabulary.
you know you're a tp'er if you take the "trouser press record guide" in with you when you take a shit--but you DON'T use the pages as toilet paper.
you know you're a tp'er if you respect the importance of the group kraftwerk--but you'd rather listen to graham parker instead.
you know you're a tp'er if you look back longingly at the seventies and eighties and the scene that existed in downtown new york at the time........

oh, and yes................

you know you're a tp'er if you still have a crush on ann magnuson.
and you know you're a tp'er if the name "garland jeffreys" has any meaning for you.
Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...

Well, that stereotypes the hell out of me. Well earned, though.
Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...

oh........you're that kinda tp'er too?

You know you're a TPer when you're relishing this time of TP artists in movies like Closer, The Runaways, The Blockheads and lord knows what else coming down the pike.

Though I am still pissed that Telstar is only available in Britain.

Yep, sure is. Although I rarely use it unless I'm talking to people around my own age.

Actually, it's the other way around for me.

Heck, I look back at those decades and I miss the scene that existed right here in Colorado Springs!

> ... if you still have a crush on ann magnuson.

I can't name a single thing she's done, or even picture her face in my mind, so I guess not.

> ... if the name "garland jeffreys" has any meaning for you.

Yep, it does.

Well, if I'm doing that, I'm certainly a "tp'er" ... regardless of whether I have a book with me!

Bongwater
she's also an actress - I think her one big break was starring in a John Malkovich vehicle - "Making Mr. Right". The turtles "Happy Together" video basically shows the whole movie.

She's also David Bowie's victim in "The Hunger" and betrays the US and then gets knifed for her trouble in "Clear and Present Danger"

Wow! I knew all that without once looking any of it up. I guess I got a crush too.

Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...

...and she seduces River Phoenix in the otherwise forgettable A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon. Good times.
Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...
April 13, 2010 10:37AM
Oh, she doesn't really betray the US, she had information seduced out of her. That's the most "normal" role I've ever seen her in.
Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...
April 13, 2010 11:35AM
She's amazing in The Grifters, but it's hardly a role that would inspire a crush. Terror, maybe.
Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...
April 13, 2010 11:40AM
Which role did she play in "The Grifters?" Is there a sly joke here that I'm missing? Aside from the fact that she maybe-sorta looks a little bit like Angelica Huston?
Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...
April 13, 2010 01:16PM
Ah! You're right, it was Angelica Huston. I always get her mixed up with Ann Magnunson (for no real reason, apparently). Sorry about that.
Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...
April 13, 2010 03:27PM
ann magnuson is more of a shirley maclaine type. i mentioned her because i used to hang around the fringes of the "Bongwater" crowd (very much on the fringes) and at the time she was considered to be ineffably "hip." i never did get to meet her or even see her live, but she's incredibly sexy in "Making Mr Right" (though the film is terrible).

at the time Mick Farren (whom i DID get to meet) was even hipper than Magnuson. Who remembers Mick Farren? if you remember Mick Farren, you're REALLY a tp'er................
Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...

Everybody remembers Farren. If you remember Larry Wallis, you're a TPer.
Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...

The local used shoppe has an autographed copy of the Stiffs Live album hanging on the wall and I was quite impressed to see that Larry Wallis was one of the signers.

Don't think they got Dury's scrawl on it, though. Sadly, they never will. But they've got Costello, Lowe and Wreckless, I think. I'd buy the damn thing if I had anything resembling disposable income.

Kings of Oblivion, baby!
Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...

Everybody remembers Wallis. You're really a tp'er if you remember Steve Peregrin Took. (Just kidding. Just having a little fun........)
Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...
April 20, 2010 02:27PM
...you can carry on a conversation about the career of Gary Tibbs.
Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...
April 13, 2010 11:23AM
Okay, perhaps a pic search is in order ...

Nope. Does nothing for me.

But I do still have a crush on Kate Bush. Will that restore ... whatever cred I had?

Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...
April 13, 2010 11:32AM
I liked the back cover of Bongwater's The Big Sell-Out, but for the most part I admired Ann Magnuson more than had a crush on her.
Re: You know you're a TP'er when ...
April 20, 2010 02:31PM
OF COURSE your crush on Kate Bush restores your credibility. (hell, even a crush on tori amos would have restored it. your credibility never really was in doubt.)

I still got a crush on Katy Jane Garside. Whether that adds an extra TP layer, I don't know.

1. when you spend a whole daY REARRANGING your cds and while doing so put a huge stack of a few hundred for yourself to listen at a later date.
2. when ypur musician friend plays you one of his new songs even though your proficiency is minimul , you can name 10 other songs thAT his song sounds like .
3 You see a craPPY movie but like a song in it so you have to wait around to see who sings it. when you get home you google the artist and eventually pick up a few cds.
4 You refuse to listen music of the same genre twice in A row.
5. You bought somones cd without heaRing it because they were listed as one of the musicians on another artitsts cd . or you have bought a cd cause in their interview or A critique praised or was compared to THE replacements.

You hear something about Homeland Security head Janet Napolitano, and think of Concrete Blonde.
