So, what type of music do you listen to?
January 13, 2010 06:51PM
How the f*#& do you answer that one?
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?
January 13, 2010 07:32PM
Well, I don't really like music, so I don't worry about it.

I'm surprised the question still gets asked as much as it does. I abandoned such dead-end generalities long ago, and now try and ask things along the line of:

The last time you listened to music while taking a bath, what was it?

or

Did you play any music while cooking breakfast this morning? What was it?

"Mostly hard rock, some rap, some alternative pop, and some country because my boy likes it. A lot of old dinosaur stuff from my college days. Always CDs, never the radio."

That usually gets it done.

Hey, Brad Paisley is not too bad!

"Music that falls between culture's sofa cushions."
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?

I generally just dodge the question when asked, since I can usually tell that the person asking is just dying for me to say something nice about Nickelback or Brad Paisley or someone else I care nothing about.
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?

I've got nothing against Paisley. Just someone I've never taken the time to listen to, and who I always get confused with Kenny Chesney.
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?

I'm not particularly found of country music, but Brad Paisley is an extraordinary guitar player with overwhelming talent. I regard him in much the same way as I do Albert Lee and Chet Atkins.

"Good music."
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?

I usually just name the 3 or 4 things I've been listening to recently and get blank stares in response.

Last night I made the mistake of mentioning the group The Seventy Sevens in a conversation about hard-to-find OOP music.

My friend: Who are they? What kind of music are we talking about?
Me: Um, they're usually categorized as Christian Rock, I guess.
My friend: Like Stryper?
Me: No.
My friend: Well what are they like then?
Me: In the eighties, I guess they were considered part of a reaction to the dominant white bread CCM scene. Then, they became more singer-songwriter based, maybe. These days, I think they've gone in a blues-type direction.
My friend: So they're like Jars of Clay?
Me: ....

Boogie thrash.

"I have a catholic reach," is my typical answer.
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?

I just repeat the following mantra until I'm numb to all critical thinking:

"It's-all-just-music-it's-all-just-music-it's-all-just-music!"

And before you know it, I'm feeling fine and ready to resume my day.
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?

the exchange always goes like this:

"so what do you listen to?"

"mostly stuff that isn't really popular, you probably wouldn't be familiar with most of them" ***note, I know this is such a pretentious answer, but its accurate and I try to say it as modestly as I can.

"oh really, like who? Come on, name some"

*names some bands that I'm currently listening to*

"ok, you were right - I'm not familiar with any of them"

*sigh......*

Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?

My stock answer used to be: "Willie Nelson, Van Halen, Mozart ... you know, that sort of thing."

a garage band in some neighborhood..
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?

a common answer, at least around these parts, is "oh, i listen to a bit of everything", which, at least around these parts means, "oh, i love everything i see on mtv and hear on the classic rock station, but i also own bob marley's 'greatest hits'. "

me? i only listen to hasil adkins and jandek. occasionally i'll throw on something by whitehouse or magma, but won't be very interested in it.

however, a lot of my conversations seem to go like this:

or this:

(oh, and i'm the guy trying to buy the beefheart record, btw)
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?

you mean that band from that town next to the guy with the awesome yard?
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?
January 15, 2010 06:51PM
Nile, you jest but there is some truth to that answer.

I go with "all kinds of stuff" and "mostly obscure sh*t."
"The best of all types of music" is one that sorta works. I like alot of old music so thats easy. I don't explain my obsessions with Parsons, Cale, Bolan or Bowie but I do like the Beatles, Stones and BBs. That works for most.

M.Johnson - No likey music? this place must be a bore for you.

Actually, it's often easier to answer that question by telling the asker what you choose not to listen to.
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?

I always say "pretty much everything", and then explain that means only types of music. If they try to pin me down, I usually say I have 60 days worth of music on my computer, and then I hit shuffle.

Or I say "The Mekons" and get the stare.

Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?

My first response is "All kinds."

When pressed for details, I then respond with genres: "New wave, postpunk (or ''80s alternative' if I don't the they'll understand), prog, jazz, alternative..."

Then, if pressed for specific artists, I answer with ones I think they should have heard of: "Elvis Costello, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Blur, etc."

I generally don't dare drop Comsat Angels or The Chameleons on anyone.

There's one really irritating question I've been getting more frequently in recent years (usually from my co-workers, or my wife's friends). Whenever someone asks what I've been listening to lately, or who I've seen in concert recently, he or she follows my answer with: "Who do they sound like that I've heard of?"

Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?
January 15, 2010 12:05PM
What I love about that question, Delvin, is (based on a conversation with a co-worker a few weeks back):

Me: Well, I just saw The Gaslight Anthem a couple of weeks ago.
Co-worker: Who are they?
Me: Just a 4-piece rock group from New Jersey, you know?
Co-worker: Like Bon Jovi?
Me: No. Well, maybe a little. I mean, they're more like Springsteen meets The Replacements, with a dash of Tom Petty, The Clash and a couple of other things.
Co-worker: Then who do they sound like that I'd listen to?
Me: Well, they're just kind of punk-influenced, straight-ahead rock, really.
Co-worker: That sounds like Green Day to me.
Me: I don't know, I don't actually listen to Green Day.
Co-worker: I thought you liked music!
Me: I do, I just don't listen to Green Day. I've heard them, of course. They had that "Time of Your Life" song, and they did The Skids cover thing with U2, right?
Co-worker: Who are The Skids?
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?
January 15, 2010 01:48PM
Ahhh yeah, I hear ya Jermoe.

One of my long-time favorites transpired when I told a co-worker that I had seen the Ramones the previous weekend. He asked, "Who are the Ramones?"

That didn't surprise me much. I explained a bit who they were. He nodded and asked, "So were they playing at McNichols?"

McNichols was the big professional hockey/basketball arena in Denver at the time. Any rock group worth paying to see in Denver must have been playing there, right?

Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?
January 15, 2010 08:18PM
When I think of McNichols Arena, I think of one man: Alex English.
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?

I remember when music was such an imperative in junior high. Kids would quiz me:

Who sang Cold as Ice?

The Icicles.
Re: So, what type of music do you listen to?
January 16, 2010 09:58PM
Actually, I tell people it's a TP thing. You wouldn't understand.

And they say, A TP thing?

Yes. I only listen to the most obscure, newest, freshest music out there and write about it. Say your 12-year-old daughter was taking piano lessons. After she hits only a couple notes, I would write:

Staccato melody with a salsa beat and middle eastern jazz flavored tones peppered with an Upper West Side sensibility, this songstress truly redefines the post-modern purpose of how a pianist works.

Then they walk away.

Here you go, Delvin:

English and his acclaimed sideman Kiki Vandeweghe were known for their "string music" compositions.
