I'm listening to it right now for the first time in years and am reminded what a great damn album it is. I'd never really paid attention to the fact that Martin Hannett produced it, though I remembered it having an exceptionally clean mix. Even the Sly Stone cover comes off pretty well. No other Magazine album ever quite grabbed me, but this one rules, goddamn.

Every time I listen to Magazine I'm more convinced that they were the most underrated band in post-punk. Joy Division, Gang of Four and PiL get all the glory, but Magazine was as good as any of them and did a lot of it first.

I'm surprised they haven't been namechecked more lately by the neo-new wave bands. I bought a couple of the recent reissues and was amazed at how much of their sound lives on (in watered-down form, of course) in a lot of the current crop of fake new wavers.

Ah, yes, this album features one of the rare instances of a Sly & The Family Stone cover that's equal or superior to the original.

Just how rare is said occurrence? Hmmm. Can you think of another example?

RHCP's "If You Want Me To Stay" is a pretty darn good version IMO

The fact that Magazine had four totally unique musicians in Devoto, McGeoch, Formula, and Adamson didn't hurt. Too bad they didn't last. Jim Kerr posted a great blog earlier this year about his memories of Simple Minds touring with Magazine 30 years ago.

They toured out here in '79 as the support for XTC who put shit on them at every media opportunity. I always wondered if they felt threatened.

I have an old cassette of this album rotting away in a trunk that will have to be found for another spin ... because I remember not liking it much at all.

Of course, that was a long time ago.

Other than that, all I have of anything involving Mr. Devoto is the "Spiral Scratch" EP. That almost shouldn't count, perhaps.

So. To the vaults!
