That's nice. But rather than shotgun your sonic love across the vastness of Johannesburg (the largest and possibly wealthiest city in sub-saharan Africa) you might want to target it more specifically to a less well off subset such as Soweto.

STEVE, Nile called you out. He said you were a telescopic philanthropist. Dang.

i live in topeka, ks... i would donate my entire collection to the city to sell as long as they promise to fix the at least one pothole on my street (to make my wife's drive easier) and play "bonzo goes to bitburg" or tom waits' "tango till they're sore" before every city council meeting...

So what's the deal with Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church? I thought San Diego had some sick puppies, but this Phelps guy is a real piece of work.

nile: i've never met the guy so i can't really say what his deal is, but i gurantee his taste in music sucks... not to be rude, but your asking me what the deal is with phelps is like me asking you what the deal is with the san diego chicken (assuming you live in san diego, if not, i'm sorry)... i'm not trying to be a dick but most topekan's are deeply embrassed by the fact that we're constantly associated with that asshole (and are sick of answering questions about him - i lived in europe for a while and was repeatedly asked similar questions there. eventually i started telling people that i'm from kansas city instead). not that anyone should be embrassed by the san diego chicken... that dude rocks.

ned: phelps doesn't just hate homosexuals. he hates everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, and always has, no matter what rhetoric he spews. i can't tell you how many bands have come through topeka and vowed to never return after noticing his protests outside the venue, as though it was our fault. he even protested bob dylan's one and only appearance.

their "protests" are more political in nature now, and less frequent in topeka than they used to be. unfortunately for everyone else, you're more likely to see the westboro baptist church in your town than i am here in topeka...

for anyone that cares, there is a great documentary about the wbc and their bullshit called 'fall from grace':

oh, and (if you've made it this far), back to music: am i the only one that considers the paper chase the best band of this decade?

Didn't mean to be rude, and in fact your answer explains perfectly what I was wondering to myself. I wasn't asking for you to justify him, of course, and my question was more rhetorical than literal. It was more in the vain of...WTF??? I'm just sorry that his existence has been such a black eye for you and your fellow Topekans.

And yes, I live in San Diego. In fact I'm a native San Diegan. And yes, I've met Ted Giannoulas ("The Chicken"). He was very nearly a fixture promoting KGB-FM radio at my high school early in his career when he was the KGB Chicken. He's a source of pride for San Diego. And yes, he rocks...I can tell you from personal experience he's a very cool dude. Plus he and I are both 5'4" tall, so as Iggy Pop might point out, he's an excellent example of what a 5 foot 4 man can do.

I can assure you, in my line of work, being seen prancing around like a chicken (let alone wearing a chicken outfit) would definitely be a career-limiting move.

On the other hand, I wore my Devo outfit to the office on Halloween, and it was a big hit, I'm happy to say.

Hmmm...greater freedom of expression, great pay, free attendance to professional sporting events, able to obnoxiously and impudently mock the rich and famous, relative job security, world famous celebrity when you want to be and near total anonymity when you don't. Plus he rarely has to say a word at work.

If you ask me it sounds like the chicken gig is the way to go.

Thanks! I was pretty glad for the chance to wear it. And most of my co-workers dug it.
