Milk 'n Cookies

I was up in Normal, Illinois, today and one of the used record stores had a copy of the sole album by Milk 'n Cookies on CD for $7. I didn't pick it up, but I doubt that it will be flying out the door of the store anytime soon.

Ira's review of it (in the Ian North entry) is positive but not overly enthusiastic. So I'm trying to figure out if I need to grab it next time I pass through Bloomington-Normal. If anyone familiar with it thinks it's a steal at $7, let me know.

I'm not familiar with Milk n Coolies' sound, but you should buy it anyway. Who knows, it may grow on you and you may have a collectible item on your hands.

I just checked them out on Rhapsody - musically, they're pretty good '70s style power-pop, but the vocals make Moon Martin or Michael Quercio sound manly. So the CD will probably sit safely in the rack at the record store until someday when I'm passing through Central Illinois and am frantically desperate to spend money.

The same record store has a magazine section that had a large format Don Martin book from the 70s for $5, which I meant to buy, but set down when I started looking through the CDs and completely forgot about till now. Oh well.

Those mid70's power pop bands are usually heavy on the pop, less on the power. The Quick is still my fave.

And pick up the Don Martin book before he gets to experience the "better late than never" artistic appreciation he's earned since around 1960, and you can't find it for less than 50.

I'd love to get a copy of that Complete Don Martin book, but I think it goes for about $150 new. And weighs about 60 pounds.
