Best band performances in the movies

- TSOL Suburbia
- Oingo Boingo Back To School
- EWF Sgt. Peppers
- Circle Jerks Repo Man

I know they don't play but the Untouchables beat up Emilio with their instrument cases Beat down!

- The Strawberry Alarm Clock - Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

That's all I can think of for now

Sparks - "Rollercoaster"
Jonathan Richman - "Kingpin"
Pianosaurus - "New York Stories"
Tito & The Tarantulas - "Dusk To Dawn"

And if you wanna go way back:

Yma Sumac "Secret of the Incas"
Yardbirds "Blow Up"
Was watching "Bunny Lake is Missing" the other night and the Zombies popped up.

Jonathan Richman - There's Something About Mary
5 6 7 8s - Kill Bill
Elvis Costello - Americathon, Austin Powers: Spy Who Shagged Me
T Bone Burnett & David Mansfield - Heaven's Gate (Mansfield actually has a sizable role in the movie, and he and Burnett are both musicians at the skating rink. Think Mansfield gets killed later on, but not sure about Burnett. Haven't seen the movie for a long time)
Plimsouls - Valley Girl

Old 97's in "The Break-Up"...the band was fine, but it seemed like they were just kind of shoe-horned into the story, representing a demographically plausible form of entertainment for these two unlikeable characters.

Weren't The Rave-Ups playing at the club in "Pretty in Pink," with Andrew "Dice" Clay manning the door?

No love for the Plimsouls in "valley girl"--wtf (as the kids say)?

Reno did mention it - what more do you want from him?!

He's only one man!

Anyway...Yo La Tengo played the Velvet Underground in "I Shot Andy Warhol."

Oops. Missed breno's mention; I knew he wouldn't let me down.

I agree with the Purple Rain mention elsewhere: love Morris Day and the Time.

Yeah, I remember that, they were on the television at the pub. I recall that they got a prominent credit at the beginning of the movie and that was it.

Ramones = Rock'n' Roll High School, acting AND playing!

Yes, with the Bad Seeds. So were Rowland S. Howard and Tracy Pew, his former Birthday Party bandmates, with their band Crime and the City Solution.

And apparently Sterling Morrison looked a lot like Tara Key.

It's fairly clear that this thread (by design or accident) is focused on band appearances in movies, not on movies built around bands.

Nevertheless, I would like to say just two words: Purple Rain.

Re: bands in movies

And established bands at that. Which is why I haven't mentioned Hedwig & the Angry Inch. Oops.

It's not necessarily a great performance, but for pure "What the heck are they doing here?" value, I'd like to nominate the Lords of the New Church for their appearance in Tapeheads.
Re: bands in movies

Or Fishbone, from the same film. Do the Swanky Modes count? Or is that for another thread?

Fishbone were also in Back to the Beach, IIRC.

George Clinton & co were in P.C.U.

KISS were in Detroit Rock City, of course.

BOC were in The Stoned Age.

Marshall Crenshaw was in La Bamba playing Buddy Holly.

The 5,6,7,8's.

I would've bought a full Swanky Modes LP. Tapeheads has some flaws, but the music sure isn't one of them.

Fishbone in Back to the Beach
Re: bands in movies

Let's not forget all those bands (inc. "Little Stevie Wonder') who appeared in those 50s-60s beach flicks.
