Favorite band name?

Favorite band name?

New topic ... or at least, one I haven't seen on this board:

Your favorite band name? Doesn't matter if the band is well-known. (If it's a local band that never did get widespread recognition, please be sure to mention that.)

When I was at NYU in 1990 or so there was a band that played the college bars called When People Were Shorter and Lived Near the Water. I almost went to see them based on name alone. Never happened though, and I have no idea what they sounded like.

That band is reviewed on this site.

Oops. I guess I could have done a bit of research. But I stand by my decision all those years ago to not see them!

There was a band in Denver in the early '80s called "Crank Call Love Affair." That one has stuck with me over the years. (Never actually saw or heard the band, but I sure dug the name.)

A friend of mine currently has a band called "The Neverland Ranch Janitors."

LA bands who had to change their name for legal reasons:

REO Speedealer
The Greatful Dead Kennedys
Blob Dylan
Pink Floyd The Barber

(Pink Floyd The Barber changed their name to Double Naught Spy Car - good surf band, think they're still around)

Lubricated Goat simply because it has the greatest "what the f***?" value among mainstream people. In fact, they are the band I always used to scare away annoying record store clerks in places like Sam Goody who would ask if I needed help. Nothing shuts up a record store clerk in a mainstream music store faster than saying (loudly) "Yes, where is the Lubricated Goat? I can't find the Lubricated Goat."

Classic album title: The Mekons' *The Quality of Mercy is Not Strnen*.

I had liked that title for many years by the time I saw *The Merchant of Venice* for the first time. When I heard the line "The quality of mercy is not strained" in the play, I thought of the title -- and the cover photo, showing a chimpanzee sitting at a typewriter -- and it all made sense.

I've always loved the Teardrop Explodes.

Someday I'd like to track down a copy of the comic it came from. I know it's something the Sub-Mariner yells in an old issue of Daredevil, but I've always wondered what the context was. What was the teardrop, why did it explode, and why did it upset the Sub-Mariner so much when it did?
Re: Favorite band name?
August 01, 2005 07:26PM
don't know the context but comic pal says it's in this issue

Re: Favorite band name?

from another friend

"The story follows our heroes teaming up to investigate
a strange teardrop-shaped object appearing in Central
Park - an object that's also attracted the attention of
Namor The Submariner. Misunderstandings lead to our
heroes kicking the crap out of each other until the
teardrop explodes - with hilarious consequences."

Here's the panel:

[screamingsecrets.com]

It doesn't look like Namor yells "The teardrop explodes!",
it looks like it's part of the narrative.

Speaking of Henry Miller:
The Cosmodemonic Telegraph Company

and other bands named from comics:
Let's Active
Love and Rockets
My Bloody Valentine (weren't they named from the Simspon's episode?)

Was My Bloody Valentine named after a comic? I thought it was a horror B-movie, but i could be wrong.

RE: The Teardrop Explodes link

The teardrop and that building in the background, a half naked man holding up a tree while another more timid one has thoughts of God and mommy ....hmmmm....then an explosive climax in the next panel with an exploding of the teardrop, golden fire painting things.....no, there's no subtext happening here, folks. Go about your business.

Now I really have to find that comic. I have to know what the hell was going on there. I'm thinking it's probably better than a Henry Miller novel.

Speaking of Screaming Blue Messiahs: I saw them in college, about '87. They were pretty good, very intense and rocking. One of those bands that was very hyped for a few months and then just seemed to evaporate into oblivion.
Re: Favorite band name?
August 02, 2005 06:48PM
The SBM's WERE pretty good live. Listen to Spencer Blues' (orange, for example) and draw parallels.

Saw the Messiahs in '87; they were smokin' live.

Another cool band name, this one from the '90s: Ed's Redeeming Qualities.

Speaking of John Cougar Concentration Camp:

I used to work at a record store and one of my friends who worked there told me some poor chap came in on Christmas Eve looking for a present for his girlfriend. The customer was decked out in a cowboy hat & western wear. He picked out a JC Concentration Camp CD and said something to the clerk about how his girlfriend "always liked this singer." My friend, who has a wry sense of humor, kept his mouth shut and sold him the CD. Of course, the CD was back in the used bin first thing on Dec. 26. I would've loved to have been at their house on Christmas morn', though.

Other good band names:
Bitch Magnet
Ted Bundy's Volkswagen & Pontius CoPilot & Veterans of Future Wars
(all 3 in Lexington, KY)
Swollen Colon
Pig Destroyer

Song title: Details on how to get ICEMAN on your license plate-Don Caballero

Devo.
There's so much in those two syllables (a contraction of the word devolution). The name speaks of the band's thematic concerns. And I've always loved the fact that it works as a noun, an adjective, etc.
