Books or board? The original books turned me onto many many bands when I was young and impressionable, but recalling the history is tough. Right now, The Green Pajamas are sounding pretty damn good.

Good lord. Probably at least half of what I listen to either comes directly out of the books, or from bands inspired by TP bands. I couldn't name just one.

Umm...just because this is something I recently found on CD after looking for literally years and because I would never have heard of them without TP, I'll say the Leaving Trains, specifically Kill Tunes.

I don't know about coolest, but these are bands that I can say with certainty that I checked out as a direct result of being inspired (or in the case of John Trubee, warned) by a TP review, as opposed to, say, another written source, a live show, MTV or a high school/college classmate:

I went to Bard College in 85 and was turned on to bands I never heard of from TP readers. I even sang in a hardcore band, Mrs. Whitehead. Ever hear of 'em?

Anyway, who'da thunk?

Yeah, those were the days. Every Friday night we'd go to the campus movie theatre and watch Un Chien Andalu or Peeping Tom or Pretty Poison or Lord Love A Duck ...

I won't go on. By now you know that my school was cooler than yours. Back in '85, anyway.

Yes, Un Chien Andalou was the inspiration for "Debaser." It was a collaboration by Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel, and featured a scene in which a man is holding a razor to a woman's eye, then there is a scene of a cloud cutting across the moon to symbolize the cutting of her eye. Then it goes ahead and shows the razor slicing the eye anyway.

'Twas a live girl, not a dead horse, but they cut to an eye they got at a butcher shops - they didn't really blind the girl.

Great film, by the way. The Butthole Surfers used to show it at their shows. Dali & Bunuel's follow-up "L'Age d'Or" was pretty dull, tho. Dali made a stunning animated short for Disney called "Destino" that should be seen by all.

Bowie used the film as the "opening act" to his monochrome Station To Station tour. Books as big as cinderblocks have been written about that opening scene, surely one of the most audacious in all cinema. The most convincing explanation I've read is also the simplest: that it was Bunuel's way of assaulting the passive bourgeious viewer in the organ he/she used to experience the silent film (a "debasement" of the cinema experience, if you will). On the other hand, I'm getting sick of myself typing this and thinking about the folly of fixing a definition onto a symbol like that. Whatever the movie's merits, you'll never forget watching it.

Definitely agree with Fab. I had the privilege of viewing "Destino" as part of a Dali exhibit at MoMA last year. A truly beautiful piece of animation.

Yeah, that opening scene definitely was assaultive. I've seen the film on two occasions, many years apart. I guess the first viewing had more of an impact on me than I'd realized, because when I sat through it the second time (at the aforementioned exhibit), I caught myself starting to cringe as the razor-blade moment approached.

Bunuel also directed one of the most depressing documentaries I've ever seen, about poor country folk in Spain in the 30s. Don't remember the name of it, but jeepers, it was grim. I mainly remember the poor donkey dying.

Edit: It was called Land Without Bread, and apparently it was an early example of the mockumentary. However, Bunuel did have two animals killed as part of the filming process, including the poor donkey that was stung to death by bees, after Bunuel coated it with honey.

What a swell thing to do.

It was especially cruel considering that the donkey in question was the favorite for Best Supporting Actor that year. Previous animal actors had played the Anquished Honey-Coated Donkey character, but none had plummed its depths to such an extent.
