Skynyrd are not exactly what anyone would consider TP music, but Kings of Leon and Drive-By Truckers both have entries here and it's hard to imagine either of those bands without Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Like Skynyrd or hate 'em, Powell was a fine piano player.

That means there's only one original member of Skynyrd left - guitarist Gary Rossington. Isn't it time to throw in the towel?

street survivor my ass. fucking plane crash... florida sucks a little more now.

Back in 1977 or whenever it was, my brother filled out the Creem reader's poll and sent it in, and for the "Disappointment of the Year" he'd written "Lynyrd Skynyrd didn't get killed." Then the plane crash happened not long after that (on my birthday, in fact!). My brother felt pretty awful about that.

I still don't particularly care for Skynyrd's music, but I grudgingly give them the respect they're due.

yeah like, i was at the LAST concert even.
the real high/low point was when some guy 'attempted' to crawl along a main beam that traversed the entire width of the hollywood (fla) sportatorium.
he made it EXACTLY halfway, then the spotlight crew saw it and shined, what turned out to be the heavenly light, cause the poor fellow sure went straight to it (albeit DOWN) mighty quick!

ps sportatorim fact: that particular show broke that particular venues attendance record to that point (maybe even all time even).
22,000 people.

hey and also, leonards skinned innards, got their first tour start compliments/opening for THE WHO.

Three original members of Skynyrd still are alive & kicking: Rossington, guitarist Ed King and drummer Artimus Pyle.

After Skynyrd's 1987 reunion/tribute tour became an ongoing proposition, the widows of Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines (both of whom died in the plane crash) reached an agreement with Rossington. It stated that any band calling itself Lynyrd Skynyrd had to include Rossington and at least two other original members.

King and Pyle have long been on bad terms with Rossington, so they haven't participated in the Skynyrd tours. Bassist Leon Wilkeson died in 2001, but Skynyrd has kept touring since then. Given that, I doubt Powell's death will slow Rossington down. Money talks, I guess.

Pyle isn't the original drummer - that would be Bob Burns.

But you're right. Technically they should have stopped after Wilkeson died. But Rossington was never able to make a big go of it without Skynyrd, so I guess he'll keep on trucking, cranking out "Freebird" for whoever wants to hear it.

Exactly what do you mean by "powder days"? Sorry, but I'm hesitant to assume that I follow the way you're drifting.

I dunno. Wasn't the drummer the vocalist for Strawberry Alarm Clock? Bands where the drummer sings have always bugged me.

No good rationale why. Just always makes the other guys in the band look like goofballs to me, although I admit there's no good reason why it should. Even Husker Du. Grant Hart is great, loved his songs, always hated to watch them when he sang.

Though I must say that Bev Bevans' vocals on the Move's version of "Zing! Went the Strings of my Heart" truly kicked ass. Much better than Bert Convy's version I saw on his variety show in the 70s.

Bands where the drummer sings have always bugged me.

Standard Band joke #324:
Q: What do you call a drummer who sings?
A: A cab.

Is it also because of the physical parameters? Drummers have to sit a certain way so that they can be at the correct position for singing and then maintain that position while moving almost the entire rest of their body. Hey, it's like River Dancing© innit! Added to this, because of the way you have to mike the kit, you have to mike the drummer vox in a certain way that further defines the position.

Damn it must take some skill. I can't chew gum while I take a couple lead bars.

But it's just not the same as a real frontman is it? (Rock has a certain frontman tradition so that must play into it as well). Max Weinberg has done pretty well but I remember when Conan first came on and Max's deadpan stare creeped my girlfriend out.

A friend of mine was a drummer-singer in a popular rock band that I think pulled it off the best but I didn't mind Hart the cupla time I saw the Dü. Forget Henley (for many reasons) but how bout Karen Carpenter?

{What great indie/underground drummer/lead singer am I gapping on?}

Sometimes I've noticed the actual sound of the drums coming through the mic made it hard to hear the vocals and I've also noticed some getting a bit short of breath.
A couple who made it work really well, though, were Keish from The Hard Ons and Duncan from Snuff who both COULD be forgiven for getting short of breath given their style(s).

Like I said, it's a completely irrational dislike. Always hated the video for "What I Like About You" because the drummer sings.

I think as long as I don't have to see it, I'm okay with it.

I think the drummer of the great, underrated Jacob's Mouse was also the vocalist. My brother loved them, but told me I wouldn't like them for that very reason, to which I replied as long as I didn't have to see it happen, I was fine.

I also remember seeing Carmine Appice videos on Night Flight or Hollywood Heartbeat back in the late 70s. He didn't sing, but he was out front and on a riser, which again made the other members of the band look dopey to me.

I have always disliked drum solos, also, since few things kill the momentum of a song better than having everybody else stop playing so the drummer can bang around for a couple of minutes. At least when Trio had drum solos, the guitarist and keyboardist would go over to the side of the stage and play ping pong until it was over.

Someone else needs to die now, so this thread can get back to memorializing someone instead of being about my bizarre hatred of drummers that don't know their place.
