I always enjoy reading Jack Rabid dueling with Wayne Coyne over this issue anytime the Flaming Lips are interviewed in Big Takeover.

The article made me consider this question: Given a choice, would you prefer that an act cancel its performance due to adverse conditions, or go on stage and lip-sync (or in this case, bow-sync) to a tape?

I'd say the former. For all the disappointment and inconvenience to the fans, the artist's reputation usually is less damaged by a cancellation than by a "fake" performance. (This presumes that said artist's reputation was worth shit to begin with.)

In this case I can't imagine anyone caring enough either way to justify cancelling that performance or lip-syncing.

If they truly thought a performance was neccessary, why didn't they just perform live, but inside and televise it? They had a legitimate concern about the cold and their instruments. Wern't they playing for the 99% of humanity who would only see them televised anyway?
