Guess Asheton died after the votes were already cast
January 15, 2009 01:13AM
RRHOF inductees:

Metallica
Run DMC
Jeff Beck
Bobby Womack
Little Anthony & the Imperials
Wanda Jackson

Shaftees:
War
Chic
The Stooges

I have to say, as I did when this year's nominees were announced, I love Wanda Jackson. But a Hall of Fame inductee over any of the three that were passed over? Screw that. As I also said at that time, if they insist on having this thing, is it too much to ask that they at least get it right? Apparently so.

I don't object to Metallica getting in on principal, but their presence on the list underscores the Rock Hall's biggest problem: ignoring true pioneers at the expense of more contemporary acts that will sell tickets.

At least Bobby Womack (who's never been as big as he deserved) and Little Anthony (whose work may not hold up as well as other doo-woppers', but at least were one of the genuine pioneers) made it in.

Bobby Womack, a bigger pioneer than Metallica? Hmmm.... Not sure about that one.

Metallica may not have invented their style of metal, but they've influenced plenty of other bands around the globe.

Speaking only for myself, I don't see Jeff Beck as being in this league, at least not as a solo artist. Great guitarist, sure. But he's actually put out relatively little in the way of worthwhile music since leaving the Yardbirds four decades ago. Indeed, a lot of his '70s output was just the sort of music that all but necessitated punk. (Not that the Hall would hold that against him.)

And he should quit dying his hair. Dude's almost old enough to collect Social Security. As he keeps it jet-black, he's starting to look like one of the undead.

beck belongs. so does womack.

right after
richard Thompson
capt beefheart
l cohen
stooges

chic doesn't. and metallica doesn't. forget influence. ET influenced much. it still sucks.

Cohen was inducted last year. Guess Beck and Womack have only three acts ahead of 'em in line.

good for Leonard!

i still live in the 80's!

Was anybody around in the 80's and early 90's to remember what an enormous cultural force Metallica was? I am no metal fan, in general, nor do I even support the principle of a rock HOF, but, if anyone should be enshrined in Cleveland, Metallica certainly qualifies. Leonard Cohen? Bobby Womack? Please...

As long as people in the '80s know you, I guess that's okay.

I've got no issue with Metallica being in.

The thing that bugs me about it, and has from the beginning, is the American Baby Boomer bias of the whole thing. If the NME had had the bright idea to create the thing rather than Rolling Stone, there would be a completely different roster of inductees.

Kate Bush, for instance - stands no chance of ever being in the RRHOF as it is now. Had someone in England decided to create the damn thing and locate it in London or something, she'd be a first ballot inductee. And the post-punk wing would not consist solely of U2 and REM.

Baby boomer music tastes dominate the RRHOF? There must be a secret cabal of ancient boomers calling the shots there. Bastards!

Who really cares if a bunch of aging rock & rollers gives your pet band the RRHOF seal of approval?

Well, it is a hall of Fame. The rock and roll aspect is relatively incidental. Maybe they should rename it the "Famous Rock and Roller's Hall."

Just out of curiosity:

What percentage of RRHOF inductees do you think know who Big Star or the Replacements were?

More than 50%? More than 15%? More than 5%?

Or the "Popular Music Hall of Fame"...? I don't know. Labels are troublesome things.

RRHOF inductees? The guys being inducted? I have no idea. Wouldn't it be more relevant to ask if the nomination committee knows who those artists are?

Well, I assume the nomination comittee are more likely to know who the great alt/underground bands are (even if they can't quite bring themselves to nominate them.)

Every year I end up getting into a heated discussion with somebody about it, and then I smack myself in the head at my own stupidity for taking it seriously.

If Big Star, Johnny Thunders, the Faces, the 'Mats, the Stooges and [INSERT YOUR BAND OF CHOICE HERE] aren't in it - can it really be called a "Rock & Roll" Hall of Fame?

Bah.

Humbug.

Jeez every year, the same conversation. Why don't we get Ira or whoever maintains this site to add a link for the TP HOF, limit the inductees to 5 and forget about the RRHOF?

I’ve monitored this board for years. Finally broke down and started “contributing“ recently. I try not to get in anyone’s face about anything. But …

This and every other RRHOF thread rate among the lamest excuses for a topic on this board ever.

It’s like Bill Whitten said:

I’ve seen the best minds of my generation praying to the devil, being remunerated and Golgotha is near Cleveland.”

Ray Davies said something like:

"Rock and roll has become respectable. What a bummer."

Keep in mind that the man said this the very night he was is ENSHRINED in that tin-foil edifice!

At the end of the day … who gives a damn? It’s sort of like winning a wet t-shirt contest or something.

...

Here are some fake headlines I care more about:

“Bush, Beefheart Military Pedigrees Questioned”

"Jim O'Rourke Joins, Quits CSN&Y"

“Mariah Carey Sings Mazzy Star"

“Veruca Salt - Did They Really Exist?”

“Senator Gibby Haynes, TX (R)”

“Canadian Geese Blamed For LaGuardia Crash. Canada Unavailable For Comment.”

...

I’m sorry. This is my first, last, and only post on this topic ever. I just could not sit on my hands any longer.

Counting the days until The Inauguration. For the first time in over eight years, I’m proud to be a "merkin."

I've heard some shocking revelations, but this is the first time I've ever heard someone admit to being proud to be a pubic wig.

On one hand if the R&RHOF was in the UK the Jam, Kate Bush, and perhaps even Wire and/or PIL would have been inducted long before now. On the other hand, so would Shakin' Stevens and Cliff Richard.

Can't say I have problem with Metallica being in there, it's just that the Stooges (or even Iggy solo) should be there first. (of course if Asheton had died BEFORE the votes were tallied the Stooges would have been in there for sure).

Guess we can count on Suicide getting in around 2042 or whenever one of the two dies, whatever comes first (and it'll still be a couple of decades after Depeche Mode gets in).
