Horrible news - click here.

I'm in shock. My heart goes out to his family and bandmates.

Dammit. He was definitely one of the greats.

For what it's worth, the Stooges will probably now finally get in the R&R Hall of Fame. It took Sterling dying before they finally decided the Velvets were worthy.

Yeah, I guess Ron joins Sterling in that "club," along with the two Joes (Strummer and Ramone).

Actually, both the Ramones and the Clash were inducted in their respective first years of eligibility, if I'm not mistaken. Still sad, though, that Joey and Joe couldn't make it to the ceremonies.

I'm just grateful I got to see the Stooges last year. Ron was in top form that night.

From the Chicago Trib: “You take a little of the truth from everyone and mix it with a little bit of your blood and it comes out with your music,” Asheton said.

Here's another nice article, written by Mike Watt for the LA Times.

Just reinforcing my long-held notion that Watt is the coolest and nicest guy on the planet.

Too bad The Weirdness was such a weak album and too bad I didn't catch them on that tour. Damn - maybe they'll drag Williamson out of retirement and do it again (he is still alive, isn't he?).
Re: Ron Asheton RIP

Williamson's still alive, but he hasn't played music in probably a couple of decades at least. He gives interviews from time to time and always claims he's no longer interested in playing and wouldn't go back to it if asked.

I saw the Stooges do a 4-song set for KEXP that consisted entirely of The Weirdness songs. I agree that the album wasn't all that great, but I have to admit: those songs really came alive onstage. Maybe they should have recorded them live in front of an audience.

Sadly, that was the only time I ever saw the Stooges play.

I hadn't heard The Weirdness yet when I saw them, but oh yeah, those songs bowled me over in concert. Walking back to the car after the show, I stopped in a record store and bought a copy of the new CD. I listened to it once, and said, "Oh well ..."

Of course, I should've known better than to trust any album Steve Albini is associated with. (There's a reason Albini eschews the term "producer" for himself, but he'll never admit what that reason really is.)

Re: Ron Asheton RIP

because he can't pronounce it?
Re: Ron Asheton RIP

Well, in this case, I totally agree that Albini was the wrong choice for them (same goes for the Nirvana album and that Steel Pole Bath Tub ep). However, some of his other production jobs sound phenomenal and fit the music just right (Surfer Rosa and the first Breeders album come to mind). Sorry for the thread drift....

I'm relieved to hear the reports of the songs off The Weirdness coming alive in concert....because, truth be told, it was not a particularly good album.
Re: Ron Asheton RIP

Albini is the wrong choice for any artist who'd prefer not to risk their album coming out sounding like flat, dull, monochrome crap.

Sorry for drifting a little further ... I guess Delvin:Albini::Reno:Lucinda Williams.
