Another Meaningless Poll (Christmas edition)

Another Meaningless Poll (Christmas edition)
December 18, 2008 07:18PM
What Christmas song written by a TP artist is the closest to being an enduring holiday chestnut?

Needless to say, this isn't an exhaustive list of every holiday song by an alt.rock band. Just the ones that seem to have become the most entwined with the holiday season at large - you hear them in malls, covered on other people's albums, etc.

And technically, Roy Wood is not a TP artist. But he definitely is in spirit, even if he doesn't have an entry here (yet).

Pogues + Kristy MacColl = hell, yeah. But I second the vote to include Fear and Pansy Division on the list, as well as

- Bowie + Bing "Little Drummer Boy"
- The Damned "There Ain't No Sanity Claus"
- The Yobs "12 Days of Christmas"
- Redd Kross "It's Gonna Be A Bitchen Christmas"
- The Fall "No Xmas for Jon King"
- Run DMC "Christmas in Hollis"
- Was (Not Was) "Christmas Time in the Motor City"
- Christina "Things Fall Apart"
- James Chance/White/Black "Christmas With Satan"

Yep, a TP Christmas comp is do-able. Any record co. peeps in the house?

Sorry for the untimely post, but I have a clear favorite:

Assassination on X-Mas Eve - Archers of Loaf
We're gonna get born!

I just don't know why Big Star's "Jesus Christ" has never broken through to shopping mall airplay.

How about Cocteau Twins' FROSTY single?

Or Low's "Just Like Christmas?"

"A Child's Christmas In Wales"

Kate's "December Will Be Magic Again."

Mary Margaret O'Hara's Christmas e.p.

I don't know if it counts as 1.) A real Christmas song or 2.) all that enduring. However, what about "Christmas Song" by Medicine?

I know that Doctor Teeth & The Electric Mayhem aren't TP artistes, but their version of "Little Saint Nick" has got to be my favorite Christmas song of the 20th century. This is worth mentioning because this year was the straw that broke the camel's back. I declare that I will have no Christmas music in my home that didn't predate electricity. Gimme that old time religion!

always liked the flaming lips versions of xmas songs they sometimes release on ep's... "little drummer boy", "white xmas"...

"I Wanna Be a King of Orient Ahh" – Elastica
"I'm Getting Pissed for Christmas" – Bamboula
"Shot My Baby for Christmas" – The Vaudevilles
"The Rebel Jesus" – Kerry Gulbranson
"Santa on the Roof" – Reverend Horton Heat
"Waking Up on Christmas Morning" – The Smithereens
"Super Rock Santa" – The Fleshtones

Each of those last three bands has released a full Christmas album that's well worth hearing in its entirety. If you dig the swing thing, Brian Setzer and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy both have some cool Christmas albums too.

And this band had three TP magazine covers, so I guess they're a TP band ...

"Father Christmas" – The Kinks

Bruce Cockburn's arrangement of "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" is one of my faves. He changes it to a minor key and it really makes the song meloncholy. Sam Phillips signs and I first heard it in the movie "Midnight Clear" which starred a very young Ethan Hawk and Gary Sinese before their careers took off.

Definitely not a TP Christmas album, but great none the less- Especially Darlene Love's stand out Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).
