Re: I’m drunk today and I’m rarely sober.

I’m drunk today and I’m rarely sober.

Anyone care to name that tune?

[By extension, a friend pointed out to me that Leonard Cohen must cover "Get On With The Show." I wholeheartedly agree. Can you all think of any other tracks that should go on a COHEN SINGS... disc?]

I just can't seem to take much more of this
Got too much hustle and not enough bliss
Got to give these hangers on a miss
'Cos I need some help I just don't get

No one seems to understand what's up
So-called friends come and go
And things just don't add up
Trying to make my way
Through all this illusion and myth
I don't even have no safety net

Nero fiddled while Rome burnt
Napoleon met his Waterloo
Samson went spare when Delilah cut his hair
But little David slew Goliath too

I'm just trying to get some results
Listen baby I'm not trying to start my own cult
Please tell me something that I don't know
I just wanna get on with the show

You'd think some program might do the trick
But this wall of fog is just too thick
I thought of everything but the whip
But no one on my ship is hip to it

I was thinking about what would be the least likely song Leonard Cohen would ever sing (a little insight into what I do with my free time) and I decided that it would have to be something silly like They Might Be Giants. Imagine the gravitas he would impart to "Don't Let's Start." Of course, the arrangement would be dirge-slow, and as he strums his acoustic guitar, he'd moan in his trademark rumbling baritone:

No one ever gets what they want
and that is beautiful...
Everyone dies frustrated and sad
and that is...
...beautiful...

"Carrickfergus," a beloved Irish folk song.

First became familiar with it from Van Morrison & the Chieftains' Celtic Heartbeat, then later it was used to good effect in the Janeane Garofolo/Denis Leary movie The Matchmaker, which is a moderately charming, thinly veiled rewrite of Local Hero.

Me, I would like to hear Cohen do a version of "In Your Letter" by REO Speedwagon.

Which, dammit, much like Fab I suggested that song just to be silly, but now when I look at the lyrics, well, I kind of CAN hear Lenny groaning them out:

"In your letter you said you didn't love me
You said you're gonna leave me
But you could've said it better

"Oh, in your letter, you said you couldn't face me
You said you could replace me
But you could've said it better

"You could've left him only
For an evening let him be lonely
But you hid behind your poison pen and your pride"

Enough. I can quote REO Speedwagon no longer.

Cohen should do a duet with Yoko Ono on that "My name is Michael, I've got a nickel, I've got a nickel, shiny and new" song.

And I must say that I'm grateful that - while that damn song does occupy valuable grey matter real estate in my head - I've never been able to remember the name of it, no matter how many times I've been told it. I consider this to be a small victory.

Cohen does death metal.

Quote

cohen sings and surfs with 'jan & dean'

Since one half of Jan & Dean is dead, this could work - Cohen could be the other half: "Won't come back...from dead man's curve..."

Part of me is tempted to post the title of that "My name is Michael" song.

The other part of me says, "Jeez, what did Reno ever do to you?"

Delvin, feel free to post the name. I even looked it up after posting on here, and have forgotten it again. Apparently my brain rejects it to prevent morbid curiosity from compelling me to download it or something.

Me on Santa's lap (slight return):

... I wanna hear Leonard Cohen cover "Where Do You Go When You Die?" by Robyn Hitchcock. Or "Brave Words" by The Chills. Or "You Have to Be Joking (Autopsy of the Devil's Brain)" by The Flaming Lips. And if you can't arrange that, I still want the Wayne/Jayne County action figure ..."
