I hate to pull a STEVE here and post late on a Friday after a drink or two, but fuck it. I'm sitting here listening to the reissue of U2's War that I picked up from the library. Sad to say, the bonus disc ain't much to shout about, which is the main reason I picked up the thing to begin with.

But what I am pleasantly surprised to rediscover is what a great song "Surrender" is. Maybe I knew it 25 years ago, but never liked it as much as some others on the album that now seem kinda goofy to me ("Two Hearts Beat As One", I'm looking at you). But now it seems like the best song on the album and it makes me wish I'd been paying more attention way back when.

The bonus disc with the Boy reissue is really the only one with bothering with, but it's a dandy. Probably the best documentation around for how U2 grew out of post-punk and what elements they took from other bands and gave their own spin to.

well ain't that economical of you Steve - if you ain't gonna bring enough for the whole class, you shouldn't even bring it out; pack out that water bong and send it aitch's way first. While it's goin' round I'll get out the opium tea.

Surrender is a great song, Treasure is the highlight of d2 for me - but already had the 7". I always preferred October to War, I felt War's singles were a bit ham-fisted and now, played out as well - d2 is disposable because of that - 5 or 6 versions of 2 songs - viva 80s. =P

I guess what you're saying then is that you don't need me or my narcotics.

au contraire! both are needed and welcome; the one-hitter's just so damn labor intensive. I'm a lazy high-on.

Reading about this makes me wanna listen to War again.

The real question I have on my mind is, do you think U2 have anything new and worthwhile to offer?

Being a U2 fan, I'm pretty much an odd man out on this board. But since you asked ...

I enjoyed the heck out of the band's last two albums and tours. So the answer is, yes, I certainly do think U2 has more worthwhile music to offer.
