Re: A worthwhile list?

A worthwhile list?
November 14, 2008 02:35PM
The thread about Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Singers" list/issue made me think of this. (Well, perhaps "think" is an overstatement.)

Setting aside any attitude about such lists, what sort of list do you think would be worthwhile? Such as, "100 Greatest Artists Who Never Had a Top 40 Album or Single."

Anyone care to suggest?

100 "greatest" musical vehicle accident deaths?

Just off the top of my head:
Cliff Burton, Marc Bolan, Chris Bell, Pete de Freitas, Otis Redding, Big Bopper/Buddy Holly/Ritchie Valens, Harry Chapin, D. Boon, Falco, Mary Hansen (bicycle smacked by truck), and some guy from Brainiac

I'll just let the Postmarks do it.

I will point out, though, that the actual title of the Lene Lovich song is simply "Lucky Number" and not "Lucky Number One."

Would getting hit by a boat count (i.e. Kirsty Maccoll)?
Also, Exploding Hearts (lost 3 of 4 members in a tour van accident).
For Squirrels (lost 2 members after a tire blew on their van and it ended up flipping over)

Randy Rhoads, Walter Hyatt, and Jim Croce can be added to the plane crash casualties.

Seminal Christian rocker and Bob Dylan buddy Keith Green also went out in a plane crash. And another Christian musician, Rich Mullins, got tossed from a jeep on the interstate and unfortunately encountered a semi. (Shortly after that I got dragged to an Amy Grant concert where she dedicated a song called "Further Down the Road" to him, which seemed to me to be in unfortunate taste.)

Hank Williams died in a car. It wasn't crashed, but it was an accident (an OD on morphine, I believe) and took place in a vehicle.

Top 10 "One Hit Wonders" who actually had more than one hit
Re: A worthwhile list?

An 80's edition would be pretty easy:

Duran Duran
A Flock of Seagulls
Gary Numan
Devo
Soft Cell
Thomas Dolby
Dexy's
Kajagoogoo
Big Country
Talk Talk
Scritti Politti
P-Furs
Modern English
Midnight Oil

(I'm including bands that had an artistic shelf-life, not just other top singles.)

Top 10 "One Hit Wonders" who actually had more than one hit

I was shocked a couple of years ago to learn that Looking Glass had another song make it into the Top 40 besides "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)". It only made it to #37 or so, but they did crack the top 40 twice.

Don't remember the name of the song now - just heard it on RadioIO 70s Pop and never heard it again.

From the same era, most people forget that the Five Man Electrical Band had another hit besides "Signs", also - "Absolutely Right."

The song is "Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne" and it actually made it all the way to #33.

Starz was descended from Looking Glass? Wow. You learn something new every day.

Not that I could identify a single song by Starz if I heard one, but I do remember seeing their albums around.
