Pitchfork 500

From Punk to the Present

So it has been discussed elsewhere on the net, but what do the tper's think? It is what it is. I don't have the book so I don't know the rules but you can tell many bands are just represented by their most famous song but not always their best (G'n'R, Clash, Ramones) Other's are more accurate (Reed, Bowie, Pop, Suicide, Bragg, PE). Personally I feel some artists could have had more songs. What do yinz think? Any glaring omissions?

CMJ did this a while back and put it on a CD collection....not exactly a new canon
Re: Pitchfork 500

First of all it's Pitchfork, so discounted in my book to begin with, and then I've never been a fan of 'Top...' lists anyways.

I agree with Ira, not exactly a controversial list - I agree with many of the bands, although as one would subjectively expect, I prefer different tracks throughout, from Devo (Be Stiff) to Fiery Furnaces (Blueberry Boat).

Just some initial knee-jerk reactions:
Kylie Minogue or Kelly Clarkson? what is this list supposed to be again?
Grizzly Bear instead of Panda Bear
I would have included Birthday Party, Foetus, The THE, DJ Food/Coldcut, Calexico, etc...

Re: Pitchfork 500

I'd have no issue with Minogue being on the list if they'd at least chosen the right song - I think that "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" is one of those rare songs like "I Feel Love" or "Heart of Glass" that makes the leap from simple dance-pop to something bordering on the avant-garde. Not for nothing did Paul Morley make it the kick-off point for his Words and Music, a book so unreadable it's completely fascinating.

"Love at First Sight", on the other hand, is exactly what it sounds like. A decent dance-pop song, but nothing more.

But otherwise, me being a well-known sucker for lists, this one is neither offensive nor revelatory - can quibble with individual choices, but that will always be the case. There could be worse "500 Best-of" lists from the last 30 years. What the hey, if it turns some snot-nosed kid on to Plastic Bertrand or Altered Images, I can live with it.

Why in tarnation is Don Henley on here? What is this list?

I am very pleased to see "C is the Heavenly Option" get some love. A great overlooked pop gem from the early 90s.

if i may enjoy a quick reminiscence here, breno, i had the privilege of singing Calvin's part in "C Is the Heavenly Option" onstage with themselves at Maxwell's once, and was doing fine until i had to flip over the scrap of paper on which i had scrawled the lyrics and completely lost my place in the song....i was useless, but they were great sports about the whole thing. It was a huge thrill for me. And i agree that it is a wonderful song.

godamn right man.

I swear, once I get these little kids out from under my feet, I'm gonna actually do something like that about all my musical obsessions too.

Re: Pitchfork 500

I actually find Henley much more tolerable solo than he was with the Eagles. I can hear "Boys of Summer" and "The End of Innocence" without any feeling of revulsion, although I insist on giving more credit to Mike Campbell and Bruce Hornsby for those two songs than I do Henley, based on no evidence other than the fact that I like Campbell and Hornsby seems a decent enough sort.

Can't stand a damn thing Glenn Frey has ever done solo, though. It was nigh-impossible for me to survive back in the mid-80s when the Cardinals adopted "The Heat is On" as their theme song.
Re: Pitchfork 500
November 11, 2008 07:17PM
I've always had some respect for Henley, if for no other reason that he joined Mojo Nixon onstage in Austin once to sing "Don Henley Must Die." He's obviously got a sense of humor about himself.

His inclusion on the Pitchfork list is probably some kind of irony thing. They've always seemed to be more about the constantly shifting winds of indie cool and how they can influence same than any genuine appreciation of music, at least to me. Though I do think their metal columnist actually loves music.
Re: Pitchfork 500
November 11, 2008 07:34PM
Like Michael, sometimes I'm convinced Pitchfork is more concerned with being hipper-than-thou than they are with music, especially when it comes to current stuff (take Joanna Newsom - please!). But then again, being hip has ALWAYS been a large component of pop music journalism, so if it's a stone tossed at Pitchfork it probably could also have been lobbed at TP back in 1979. Hipper-than-thou attitudes don't generally bug people until it's the next generation of hipsters copping the attitude.

However, when Pitchfork is writing about reissues, more often than not I've been pretty impressed with their appreciation of an album both in the context of the time of its original release and what makes it relevant now. (Of course, they gained huge points with me for praising the recent reissue of OMD's Dazzle Ships, an album I am not the least bit objective about. Had they hated it, my attitude towards their reviews of reissues would probably not be anywhere near as kind.)
Re: Pitchfork 500
November 11, 2008 08:53PM
I'll never be on the Pitchfork bandwagon - even at their humble beginnings - as cut/paste text only enewsletter, they were geeks first with little musical depth. They've improved their talent over the years, but still represent too much of a generation gap in opinions for me to appreciate.

Brad - you bring up their reissue reviews, but how difficult is that really, when there is already an abundance of historical perspective. On new releases, they are usually as puerile as ever in contextualizing things and as they've gained industry exposure, they've succumbed to disappearing up their own arses more than not.

I know my own tastes tend more towards the fringes, but The WIRE's end of the year lists are invaluable to find new things. They also tend to temper their nature for them as well, so it's not all bleeding edge stuff.

Re: Pitchfork 500
November 11, 2008 11:10PM
Ok, nothing from the last 2 Spoon records?

No "I Turn My Camera On"? No "The Underdog"? No "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb"?

That's not only wrong, it's un-Pitchforkable.

Re: Pitchfork 500
November 11, 2008 11:42PM
About Don Henley - he's the devil.

I hate him solo almost as much as I do with the Eagles. I always found him the one Rock star I wanted to punch in the face.....and in particular "End of the Innocence" would make my all time list of least favorite songs.

Besides it's smug pretensions as a song, the video for it is maddening. Black and white, slow motion scenes of families having cook-outs intercut with huge American flags and current events film clips.

The funniest thing about it is Henley's so keen to clue you in to the hypocrisy he sees all around him that he can't see his own :

The way it avoids its "rape" lyrics with a wholly dishonest/cop-out image :

"lay your head back on the ground/let your hair fall all around me/offer up your best defense/But this is the end of the innocence"

Sounds like rape to me...........But while the video plays you see a young man in a barber's chair getting his head shaved to join the Army. (So, THAT'S the hair falling around......?!!?!?!?!)

Can't turn those American record buyers/MTV watchers off with an image that might trouble them dontcha know.

Re: Pitchfork 500
November 12, 2008 08:25PM
I'm kind of ambivalent towards the 'Fork. As a news site, it's invaluable. In fact, it's really the only reason I hit it every day. And their reviews have improved quite a bit in the last few years. At least they've weeded out reviewers who insisted on writing in first person ("I remember listening to this on cassette in my car stereo in high school"... [yawn]).

I actually bought a disc insprired by a pitchfork review for the first time in many moons: the new Little Joy album. And I have to say their review pretty much nails it. Also they had a review once that outlined the difference between the Wedding Present and Cinerama that literally made me LOL.

Those who want to have a good laugh at pitchfork should not miss this:

Re: Pitchfork 500

My musical tastes were shaped by lists of length 10, 25, 50, and 100, but I am yet to find a list of length 500 that interest me at all. Always seems too arbitrary.

Overall, I am a Pitchfork proponent. 4 solid reviews per day of all the most interesting rock and pop artists. I dont drink the cool-aid but I do take a postive recommendation seriously. This pitchfork.tv stuff turns me off big time.

Mats: excellent, excellent summary of the evil Henley. Actually, once an old washed-up reaches a certain age (lets say 60), they cease to be evil, and just become loathsome. At 70, they become sympathetic.

BTW, I vigorously reject the idea that somehow Joe Walsh is the good Eagle. There is no such thing as a good Eagle. I am glad to be a middle aged man in a technological age where I can control my environment enough to never hear any of them again.

Merge? For sure this place could use a few more people around but I'm not sure I would come around much if bands like Les Savy Fav, Hot Chip and Black Lips were the center of discussion.
