that's the good news.

Half the year, the do forms a cir '82 simon le bon combover.
The other half, or fifteen dollars worth, gives me a recent lice survivor look.

Oh, if i only had more money to spend on myself.

I manage a haul 2-3 times a year to an eastern European underground railroad of barber trainees, a few blocks from City Hall. The cuts are $5 and the walls are covered in third worldesque possibilities. Like most barbershops in NYC, it's a gathering point of deals going down or in the making, none of which involve hair but may involve scissors. You never know what you're going to get, but you're usually attended to by no less than 4 different people whose absence of cutting utensil coordination combined with a lack of basic English skills is generally compensated by the number of blade nicks or razor/clipper burns applied.
After about 45 min. of closely measured, lopsided shearing, each side ever shortening yet failing to find harmony with the other, an instructor usually comes round for damage control and salvages whatever symmetry might yet still be possible. Each time I leave looking like a bagman for Solntsevskaya bratva, promising myself I'll find somewhere else to go next time... but almost nothing costs $5 in NYC.

When I went to college in NYC, in Greenwich Village, the cheapest place (8$) to get a haircut was on Astor Place. We called it the Astor Disaster because the results were pretty bad. I think it was a trainee center.

I went to a "training school" to get my haircut a few times in college, too. I usually got good haircuts ... but I remember being seated in the chair one day, while my assigned stylist was on the phone. The longer her phone call went on, the more tense and angry she got. When she hung up, she apologized, and as she got out her shears, she told me it was an argument with her boyfriend.

I asked for another stylist, pronto. That made the girl even more angry.
