great songs over 10 minutes long...

Can Yoo Doo Right (20.14)
Ginger Baker Do What You Like (11.47)
Frank Black Francis Planet of Sound (14.57)
Sonic Youth The Diamond Sea (25:48)

prog is pretty easy pickins, but...
Genesis Supper's Ready (22:53)
Yes The Gates of Delirium (21.50)
Rush 2112 (20.38)

The greatest of all time - "Sister Ray" by the Velvets. 17 minutes, more or less.

The 10 minute barrier generally does test the patience, even if you are a guitar solo or repetition lover. Here are some I actually listen to frequently:

Th Faith Healers - All At Once Forever (32:32) - the ultimate repetition song. Drone heaven.
Meshuggah - I (21:00) - Pulverizing mathcore.
The Fall - "50 Year Old Man" (11:36) - My latest fave. Crankiness as a weapon against mortality.
Fiery Furnaces - Quay Cur (10:25): Prog-twee masterpiece. Followed by an even better 9 minute song on album.
Television - Marquee Moon - The perfect guitar solo
Beth Orton - Galaxy of Emptiness (10:11) - Excellent downbeat trip-hop with soul.
Mercury Rev - Meth Of a Rockettes Kick
Frank Zappa - Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet - Comic brilliance.
Steve Malkmus - Real Emotional Trash - Expansive without aspiring for epic.
Mercury Rev - Meth Of a Rockettes Kick
Fela Kuti - Expensive Shit

OK, I cheat, but here are two of my absolute favorite 9-10 minute songs:

Destroyer - Rubies - Pure poetry.
Drive Like Jehu - Luau - This song just grinds me to dust every time.

Sonic Youth alone has at least 7 very strong 9+ minute songs. This deserves some kind of special recognition. The general boredom with SY on this board, I think, is disappointing:

The Diamond Sea (mentioned above)
Wildflower Soul
Sympathy For A Strawberry
Karen Koltrane
Washing Machine (my favorite)
Hits Of Sunshine
Karen Revisted
Trilogy: The Wonder

p.s. There's a 14 minute version of Planet of Sound? Holy crap. I must hear that. Not exactly the kind of song you generally stretch out.

The Fall - "50 Year Old Man" (11:36)

absolutely agree on that one - great great song. Great to see a few others around here reference shit that isn't over 20 years old. Living in the past is pretty f'g boring, what's the sense of wisdom if you don't challenge or apply it?

I nearly included Fela as well, but a bit like prog - pretty easy but all well deserved, ie. CBB, Beasts of No Nation, Underground System...etc. winking smiley

Husker Du - "Reoccuring Dreams"

amen.

Lard: Time to Melt (recently heard and somehow didn't get bored through 31:55)

Moondog: Cosmic Meditation (24:09)

Earthless: Sonic Prayer (21:12)

for short cuts, how's about

Descendents: All
Death Set: Solve It
Foetus: !

(all 4 sec)

yes, definitely an overlooked release - Frank Black Francis & Two Pale Boys - does some seriously twisted damage to Pixies materials - a must hear, especially for folks who may not be so hot on the Pixies to begin with.

Gillian Welch- "I Dream A Highway"

Although it's not as long as the other songs mentioned, "Why Can't I Touch It" by the Buzzcocks is an epic compared to the ususal length of their songs (at least those on Singles Going Steady).

Also, a longie I like is "Tam Lin" by Fairport Convention.

This Heat - "Repeat" - never thought I would like 20 minutes of tape loops but the beat is hypnotic.

I like Lard but 30 plus minutes of Jello sounds rough to me - see "I am your clock" or "They're coming to take me away"

Speaking of the DKs - Napalm Death's cover of "Nazi punks, fuck off!" is extremely short and Sepultra's version of "Drug Me" is like the Chipmunks with very deep voices.

Hawkwind - "Orgone Accumulator" (Space Ritual live version)
Suicide - "Frankie Teardrop"
Husker Du - "Reoccuring Dreams"
Patti Smith - "Radio Ethiopia" (and "Radio Baghdad" for that matter)
Neu - "Fur Immer"

and at just 20 seconds under:

Pink Floyd - "Interstellar Overdrive"

And I won't even get into jazz....
