The Temptations - Ball of Confusion
Rolling Stones - Playing With Fire
Pink Floyd - Seamus
Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven
I dunno...I think "Stairway to Heaven" is what Zep was leading up to at that point in their career. It feels more like a culmination to me than a departure. Plus they tried to rewrite it several times afterward.

And to me "Ball of Confusion" sounds completely of a piece with what the Temps were doing at the time. But that's just my ears.

New Order - "Love Vigilantes"
Lyle Lovett - "You Can't Resist It" (both versions)
Madonna - "Beautiful Stranger"
American Music Club - "Bad Liquor"
Motorhead - "1916" (for that matter, "Love You Forever" from the same album)

"Are Everything" - Buzzcocks (I first heard the Heaven 17 version when I was in high school and was blown away to learn later that it was originally a Buzzcock's tune)

Pat Benatar - "We Live For Love"
Heard it in a grocery store tonight for the first time since, oh, 1979 or so. I don't think Benatar recorded any other disco songs after that one.

Prefab Sprout - "The Golden Calf"
Not a band that ever went in for bringing the rock, except that one song.

Freedy Johnston, "I'm Not Hypnotized." Almost a bit of power-pop.

Speaking of Pat Benatar, I doubt that "We Belong" would be considered to be represenative of her overall catalog...

"Celebrate Summer" T.Rex

Although not just one song, Nesmith's country rock songs that turn up on Monkee's albums like "Listen to the Band" and "What am I Doing Hanging 'Round?"
My Morning Jacket, "Highly Suspicious"

At the time it came out (20+ yrs ago!), I would have said "The One I Love" by REM.

I have to say a lot of the songs above that I'm familiar with I have to disagree with. Just as an example, the Beatles tracks listed are absolutely of a piece with the rest of the White Album.

"Helter Skelter" is "of a piece"? I'd like to hear how that one works with "Rocky Raccoon," et al. (Just giving you a hard time!) I don't think there's a master plan going on with the White Album. Not like portions of Abbey Road, where there's tie-ins and segues.

Have to agree with Erik on that. I've never heard any kind of unified quality to the White Album. Some people seem to find that grab-bag, WTF factor part of the White Album's appeal, but frankly, about half of it bores the hell out of me.

I'd much rather listen to all six sides of Sandinista! from start to finish than all four sides of the White Album any day. (Well, any day that I have the time.)

Not saying the White Album is a unified statement, but I don't think "Helter Skelter" sounds all that different stylistically from "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey". Meaning no, I don't think it sounds different from anything else they recorded.
i agree with you tom . i guess i always put helter skelter on a different level being possibly the heavist thing they did. although thats open to opinion

If you're looking for a Beatles "song" that is different from their other songs...why wouldn't you choose "Revolution 9"? It's musique concrète, avant garde, the longest track the Beatles ever released, and clearly one of their most uncommercial pieces.
