yes it is, I just read "Sonic Transmission" and Verlaine had jabs about a lot of bands in his songs including "Prove It".
On the reverse side, the Damned wrote "Idiot Box" about their encounter trying to open for Television in LA.

Other TV fun facts:
Verlaine was a twin. His twin brother John died of a drug OD.
Verlaine thought Eno ripped off his demo tapes and Roxy Music and just re-wrote some of the songs.

The Higsons were a band? Never heard of 'em. Thought that was typical Hitchcock nonsense, like the Higsons were some eccentric middle-class family, eating lots of porridge. This puts a whole new spin on things...

Both Jonathan Richman and The Television Personalities did songs called "Velvet Underground"
The TVPs also did a Syd Barrett song.

Vindication!

I knew that I had read years ago that "Prove It" was a response to Byrne saying "I don't have to prove that I'm creative" in "Artists Only," and that when Verlaine says "Chirp chirp/the birds/they're givin' you the words" it was a shot at "Love Goes to Building on Fire", where Byrne does indeed sing "Cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep/Sing like little birds".

I knew I was not imagining that!

Verlaine also liked to use "codes" in his song:
I See No Evil" is a near anagram for Television and his kiss off to Hell ending with "I'm running wild with the one I love" reference to Hell's displeasure with Verlaine's relationship with Patti Smith.
He also thought Byrne wrote "Psycho Killer" as a response after he wrote "Torn Curtain" (both titles being taken from Hitchcock movies).

Lou Reed tried to sneak a tape recorder into CBGBs to record TV and had to be confronted by Verlaine . That was why he thought Eno took their demos to Roxy music and Ferry ripped him off for Siren.

hmmm, yes. Every time I've ever listened to Siren my first thought is how much it sounds like Television. I can definitely see Verlaine's point. It's just like that time I heard Mariah Carey on the radio and thought it was John Lee Hooker. Yes, I can definitely hear the similarities.

Hmmmm. Yes, I can see that now. And yknow what, Paul Thompson played drums and so did Billy Ficca! And both bands inhabited Earth! And Bryan Ferry was dating Jerry Hall, and she had a prominent, beaky nose just like Patti Smith!

Because yknow, drug metaphors were unheard of in rock before that, as were songs that suddenly stopped, references to birds and the usage of well known phrases from popular culture. And hell, Brian Eno, who wasn't even in Roxy Music by this point, is well known for not having any ideas of his own....

Sorry, I just think there's a wee chance that Verlaine was being a tad overly paranoid, if those are his reasons for believing that one of the most adventurous bands of the 70s needed to swipe his ideas (for what was ironically their least adventurous album at that point in their career.)

Anything is possible, but it just seems to me that Verlaine was really reaching with all this.

he was (is) extremely paranoid and always complaining of people ripping him off. Ironic that he took "Mr. Tamborine Man" and played it back to front for "Days". Maybe he thought Dylan was ripping off his thoughts he had as a lad in Delaware............

Wasn't the 13th Floor Elevators' "Fire Engine" listed as "The Blow Up" on the live tape of the same name and credited to Verlaine (though whether he actually told ROIR that he composed it or the tape's compiler made a boo-boo I couldn't say).

Not sure, but I think Brad may have been referring to "Life is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me" (1974), by Reunion...the first song I remember obsessing over as a kid.

I think Foo Fighters' "My Hero" is about their drummer, Taylor Hawkins. If the song is written by one member of the band about another member of the band, does it qualify (leaving Fleetwood Mac & Pink Floyd for the moment).

Going back to back in the day, you can't forget "Sweet Soul Music" by Arthur Conley, in which everyone mentioned & the singer himself have all passed on.

Well, about half the early Chili Peppers' songs reference the band, so that doesn't really count, does it? About like rappers' boasts....

Same goes for the Blues Explosion, come to think of it. Is there a song on any of the albums where Spencer doesn't shout out "BLUES EXPLOSION!" at some point in the song?
