Record Store Day - April 19

Sadly, that link loads slower than grandma riding on a turtle. Anyhow, participating stores will have limited edition 45s & sundry other goodies up for sale. I know Vintage Vinyl, the beloved STL indie store, is having a tax-free day, etc.

This whole event just strengthens my belief that the business model the music industry will adapt is roughly the same one that the comic book industry was forced into decades ago - distribution will eventually consolidate around the indie stores which manage to outlast the music sections of the big boxes and cater basically to the hardcore collector crowd. The indie comic stores have been doing Free Comic Book Day in every Spring for years - it started out as a way to clear unused inventory, basically, but in recent years has become a pretty big event where limited edition comics created by big name celebrities, etc. are handed out and get a lot of media coverage. So this looks to me like the record stores trying to follow that same template.

this week i did a bunch of shopping at an ithaca indie shop, and they were very gracious in extending to me the discount normally reserved to promote record-store-day.

they even threw in an LP for free since i took a copy of Culture Club's "Colour by Numbers" off their hands.

I just got back from a business trip to the L.A. area, where I found a very cool little CD/record shop in Covina. Had a great time browsing there, and found a couple of classics. I even called a couple of friends back home on my cell phone and said, "You wouldn't believe the record store I found here! Anything special you've been hunting for? I bet they have it."

Amoeba Hollywood is having guest dj sets from The Donnas (get yer cameras, pervs!), and David & Daniel from Bauhaus/Love and Rockets.

Jello Biafra will be spinning at one of the Bay Area stores.

MrFab, the parenthetical "get yer cameras, pervs!" made my weekend.

I'll be wrangling a 1- and 4-yr. old tomorrow, but plan on hitting a couple of Atlanta's indies (Wax 'n Facts & Criminal Records-conveniently located within 100 yds. of one another)...

I actually did embarrass myself @ a FYI (inc) exactly sixty miles due N of sebring FLA just a yr or two ago this very day.

I took out my list.

It wasn't pretty.

I asked the young miss for yardbirds, shadows of knight SUNDAZED/either or RHINO issues and del shannon. Big deal.However, she looked horrified @ this a simple request. Me, not exactly sure what to do with either the girls red face or with what appeared to be smirks on ageing ( i'd say most of em we're in their fifties) audiophiliacs within close proximity, I turned and ran.

I remain haunted and ashamed.

A little off-topic, but STEVE's message reminded me of something: I had an opportunity to stand in the SUNDAZED records warehouse three years ago while working on a story on the label. (The BEST damn '60s, etc. reissue label on the planet.) I felt like one of the kids in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Perhaps sensing this, their affable PR guy schwagged me a Davie Allen and the Arrows anthology and the reissue of the United States of America's album. I bit the apple.

Erik's romp through the Sundazed warehouse reminded me of when I went to a warehouse sale at Rounder Records in Cambridge, MA & I picked up the first two Swamp Dogg albums and some Shoes albums (on CD).

If anybody's in the North o' Boston area, the two places to go are the Record Exchange here in the Witch City (Salem) & Mystery Train in Gloucester.

It was a good day rummaging through the bins in Cambridge and Boston today. Dropped a cool $150 mostly on overpriced reissued vinyl and had to forcibly restrain myself. Grabbed the Exploding Hearts LP at Newbury Comics based on the recommendations on this board. (Havent heard it yet) Apparently there is a second EH record even though they are all dead (an odds and sods perhaps?) because one minute after I grabbed the legitimate record, a couple doing some vigorous rack-jobbing complained "Aaawww, where's the one with Modern Kicks?" I flashed my copy and said "Sorry, guys". (Of course, I wasn't really sorry. I am such an a**hole) Peter Wolf was playing some good-old blues/roots-rock in the store. The place was packed and vinyl was flying. Brought back the good old pre-MP3 days, if only for a brief moment. The young ones won't know what they will be missing when it is gone.

I had a great day yesterday, browsing at my favorite music stores in town. I did purchase a couple of CDs, and found several worthy purchases in the used vinyl bins. Saw a Judie Tzuke album, but she, I mean it, didn't leave the store with me.

One of the stores I shop at — the one where I found Judie — didn't have any specific observance of Record Store Day (although the clerk did bargain wiht me respectfully over my purchases). On the other hand, since the store also sells smoking accessories, it had a drawing for customers to enter. The prize was a handmade glass pipe, to be given away the following day ... 4/20.

I didn't even realize there was such an observance as 4/20, until channel surfing yesterday and discovered that G4 (the computer channel - go figure) was doing a special on it, live from Jamaica and hosted by a bikini-clad Olivia Munn. I don't really know what the connection is between marijuana and computers, but such high quality programming is only to be encouraged, in my opinion.

Yes - I think G4 has definitely figured out how to attract ratings to a network dedicated to computer programming...



I know I could give a shit about computers, but I'm a faithful viewer.

And yes, erik, this is another example of why there are no women on this site...
